Are there any fans of the Union Pacific here? Or am I the odd man out?
Let’s not start this business again–it’ll turn into a UP-bashing thread before very much longer.
[sigh] No, you’re not the odd man out. You might be able to detect some others by the avatars they use.
'Nuff said, I hope.
I’m proud to say I’m a fan of the UP!
AND A FELLOW TEXAN TOO!!! ALRIGHT!
Definitly a fan of the UP. But i’m not too sure about all that Texan stuff! [;)][}:)][:P]
I am a recovering CSX fan, newly converted to the UP.
let’s not bash the UP. i’ve had my beefs with them before, but in the end, it’s all just their way of running a business. and they do a dang good job at that.am i a fan of UP? yes. i admit it. i am. they run a business, but they do a great deal of extra things they dont have to do. but they do. for us!
-
they have a steam program. 844 and 3985 both are just plain neat (UP, please please PLEASE bring that train through Wisconsin next time you run those steamers. it’s hard for us poor people to drive far west to see them!). and don’t forget the heritage fleet.
-
DRGW 5371 is all that remains of DRGW. it’s about to get patched when Jim Young suddenly sends in a letter saying 5371 is to remain 5371 for the rest of its life. and then it’s going straight to a museum.
-
They kept demaning royalties on model trains using logos they trademarked. but they recently dropped that requirement.
i’m a fan of CNW and was sad to see them go (i cant look at 8646 and 8701 as much of CNW. i never saw any of those specific locomotive models when i was a kid. it’s all EMD for me), but if i want one preserved at a museum, i will have to push for a donation myself. it never hurts to ask, ya know?
and just for fun, while i like the updates on their paintscheme, i thought this i thought would just look cool:
I’ve been a reluctant UP fan since they took over SP. Reluctant, because I had several friends who worked for SP who took retirements within a year of UP taking over. Reluctant because no longer can I turn on my scanner and hear the following:
Dispatcher “SP 7120 East with Engineer Ruiz, you are granted work and time authority in 3 blocks, Tempe through Germann, until 2:30am”
Conductor “SP 7120 East with Engineer Ruiz, granted work and time in three blocks, Tempe through Germann, until 2:30am”
Dispatcher “That is correct, WR57 Out”
However, UP runs more trains on the Phoenix line than SP did. I also see lots of GEVOs but am still waiting to see a single SD70ACe.
In the end, the New Image flag scheme can’t be beat anywhere.
yeah. i wish UP would add the flag to everything they repaint, not just new orders. it looks good!
I am a fan of the UP when I see them, they are a rarity up here unless you go to Butler yard.
That being said they are pretty good at making money in the railroad business, so you have to give them credit for that.
Even the ex-CNW stuff?
I am a long time BNSF fan at heart but also like the UP and just about any road with a train on it…so there!
For me, the UP is the most convenient and surest bet for action in town. The heritage and steam programs are certainly a feather in their caps. Then again, I’m not that opinionated when it comes to train watching- I enjoy any train anywhere!
Heres another & I also own there stock. Always go UPRR!
Well, I guess my main interest in railroading is photography, so I guess I would say that I like any railroad that can provide me with scenic opportunities:
Yup. I think the UP qualifies for that requirement.
When I was about 4 or 5 the Oregon Short Line (owned by UP) ran through our farm. I remember the old steam engines and then the day when I saw the first yellow and gray F7 (I think). I was hooked and have been following UP since then.
dd
RR,
I agree with Chris, but I prefer BNSF only because UP does’nt run a lot of trains on the old Katy line where I live…Danny
I’m kind of a UP fan as well since the SP merger. I live near the coastline in California and miss hearing #14 talking with WR53 and getting 26 blocks Hewitt thru San Simeon, release after clearing Chatsworth, Santa Barbara and Grover. This would get the Coast Starlight all the way from Glendale, CA and San Luis Obispo. The crew was also allowed to transfer block authority to the out bound crew.
heh. you KNOW i’ll always prefer CNW paint (and seeing ex CNW SD40-2s in UP paint causes horrible pain for me), but as far as what UP can do to obtain that uniform numbering system they want so bad, a flag looks better than boring lame text on the hood. the flag has excitement to it, i’m saying.
and hey, UP orders their ACEs with cablights, gotta give 'em credit there too. unlike BNSF, who has gone all-out noselights on everything. blech
I guess you could call me an initially reluctant UP Fan. I’m always first and foremost a Mo-Pac Fan. I’m a pretty big UP Fan, but I’ll take Jenks Blue over that yellow any day. I’ve grown up with UP at the very end of the Missouri Pacific, so I’ve grown to like them more than any other railroad. I get a steady supply of foreign power that I’ll never have to go anywhere else to see other railroad’s engines.
UP isn’t required to have a steam program, so that’s nice that they take it upon themselves because they “feel like it”. The Heritage Series Locomotives are all outstanding in my oppinion (Especially UP 1982!). The first train I ever saw might have been a Mo-Pac, but 80% of them since them have been UP’s, so you learn to like what you have around you.
