Railroad worker dies in Sioux City rail yard
A railroad worker is dead, after being struck by a rail car this afternoon (Dec. 28) in Sioux City, Iowa., according to the KTIV Web site.

While few details about the person involved in this fatal accident are being released yet, a Union Pacific spokesperson says crews were sorting rail cars by destination, when a 57 year-old worker was struck by one of those cars.

It happened about one this afternoon in the Union Pacific rail yard on 28th street.

A full investigation is underway.

Mark Davis, Union Pacific Spokesperson says, “We’ll have an investigation team that will really include all phases of rail operation. Both human factor, and that would be anything employee related, track as well as mechanical the workings of the rail cars and locomotives.”

Davis says the investigation could take several days.

In the meantime, a peer support team has been put in place to help counsel other employees.

that’s terrible. it’s never fun to hear that a worker died on the job

We got a few more details at work today. Before someone goes off on a tangent, it was not a remote-control operation. It does sound like it was a panicked overreaction to a perceived danger that resulted in this loss of life.
