I have an undec. Atheran GP40X that i plan on using to model a CPRail GP38-2. The engine came with one fuel tank and it is the smallest of the three Athearn offers ( I think ). My question is: What size in gallons were the fuel tanks that came on the UP units? Athearn offers tanks with the following capacities: 2600 Gal., 3200 Gal., 3600 Gal., and 4000 Gal. Which is right or the closet to the right size?? Thanks
I don’t know. I would advise that you copy your question to http://www.trains.com/TRC/CS/forums/88/ShowForum.aspx or the model railroader forum. They might be able to tell you there.[:)]
SP’s GP40Xes had 3500 gallon fuel tanks. Its GP40-2s had 3600 gallon tanks. 4000 gallon is the size of SD40s and SD40-2s, so that is too big. I would guess, from the above information, that the Athearn GP40X comes with a 3600 gallon fuel tank. Look at photographs of CP’s GP38-2s. If there is not much room between the tank and the trucks, it is probably a 3600 gallon tank. If there is a significant gap, it might be difficult to determine the size from eyeballing it.
Good Morning,
If you are interested, I can send you photographs of Iowa Interstate GP-38-2 fuel tank details. The fuel tank has a 3,000 gallon capacity.
I request information on the procedure for attaching photographs to this response as I am not yet qualified.
The 4 CP GP38-2s produced from GP40Xs, 4521 (ex SP) and 4522, 4523, 4524 (ex UP) were built with HT-B trucks but now appear to all have Blombergs.
