Up grade can motors

Micro-mark summer catalog has 5-pole skew wound motor for $9.95, I am thinking about replaceing motors in several various train set steam & diesel engines ( poor boys hobby ). I would like to hear experienced comments on doing this in HO, and any articles or links.

I know this is an old post but thought I would throw in my two cents worth. If you haven’t all ready bought your can motors from MM check out http://www.alltronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=WN Look under motors. They have lots of hobby motors for less then three bucks. I bought two the other day for 2.95. Terry

I have never made a purchase from MM, but what I have seen is all thier stuff seem expensive. If you are getting motors for $9.95 the chance is IMO they are worth about $5.00 do your self a favor and look around. I think you should expect to pay between $20 and $30 bucks for a good one.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen these motors advertised by Micro-Mark in MR magazines with a retail of $20, but MM always seems to be having a sale, so they’re most likely on sale right now. MM describes them as having a 5-pole skewed balanced armature, oil-less bearings for “silky smooth running,” and a 2mm shaft, which is about the standard size, so $10 is probably a pretty good price for those motors.[:D]

They seem to be virtually identical to the Proto 2000 RS-11 (and others) motors. They even have the same plastic end piece. I substituted one in a P2K RS-11 with no difference in running characteristics. I’ve used a couple to do some remotoring projects and they’ve worked just as well as Mashimas and Sagamis. They were worth the $20.- I paid for them (Mashimas are $30+) and a great buy $10.-. I just ordered 10 of them.

Any motor you get for $3- ain’t gonna last long.
