Does UP treat 8444 as a special unit ? There are several pictures on RRPicturearchives that show 8444 tucked in behind 844.
Nope, you didnt get it straight. Not even sure why you tried.
No, getting a subscription would not prevent me from going to the hobby shop. OK, I will explain it since apperantly, some of you are just so baffeled by my behavoir.
I like trains, mostly from a modeler’s stand point. There is a great hobby shop within a couple of miles of my house. There are plenty of times when I go to the shop and one of these scenario’s takes place.
- I dont need anything at the moment. * Dont have enough money for what I want. * There out of what I want.
You get the idea. But when its that time of month, it gives me a great excuse to head down the store and pick up a copy or two (in case I missed last month) I also regulary pick up another of Kalmbach mags, Model Railroader. I enjoy hanging out with the boys. On plenty of nights, we have sat around with the new issues in hand and debated, discussed, compared stories either covered by or inspired by the pics and articles in the magazines. Magazines all laid out over the counters and BS flyin’, makes for a good night. That, is the part I look forward too.
Also, while it not be the most obivous factor, it is one that I take to heart personally. I know the owners of the LHS quite well. Every now and then, they give me good deals on stuff. Let
Pfft!
No need to wait for the next issue!

The only problem I have with what UP did is they put a standard yellow SD70ACe in front of the heritage engines! They should’ve put it behind all of the heritage engines, not in front of them. Was it taken off for the actual photo shoot? I also think they should be put side by side (if that is not what they did, I haven’t seen many photos of the event)
The U.P. engine is as much a Heritage Engine as any of the others. Why not put the “parent” company engine at the lead?
Having them side-by-side would be a neat photo, but that would tie up 7 tracks to do so and you still would not be able to get a “good” all inclusive photo… just too WIDE of a shot! Maybe the other thread with the individual front shots of the engines could be sewn together to simulate it?
Ok, I have seen more photos, and it looks like the heritage engines were on three tracks, two coupled together on each track, side by side by side. By the way, for those in California, you will be getting a visit from the MoPac heritage engine. It and 1983 are heading to Roseville. The others are still at Salt Lake City. I don’t think ACe 8444 is considered a special engine, but I might be wrong.
They called it a nod to the steam program. I told them that it would look AMAZING in two tone grey paint. They just kinda shrugged it off.
It is cool. For as mush flak as UP takes, some justified and some not… I love how they still do stuff like this. The Heritage Fleet and the steam program.
I cant think of any other Class 1’s that comes close. NS just released their new F units, which is sweet… but is there anyone else?

Canadian Pacific has their Hudson, some heritage F units and GP38s, and the Christmas trains.
AMEN Brother ! I would love to see the Hiawatha scheme on an SD70ACe ! With them Black wings on the nose…That might be empressive ! Danny |

It certainly says a lot about Union Pacific that they would do such a thing with the fallen flags. Nice picture. Now if only CP would do an SD70ACE in Milwuakee Road colors…
You know, I can picture what a SD70ACe would look like in the Hiawatha paint. I think that would look even nicer then the UP heritage engines! Does anyone have any photos of them side by side by side? The one photo I found on rrpicturearchives.net is the only one I have seen so far. The photos in that link wouldn’t show up, but I am thinking it is because of a busy server. I will have to look at that in a little bit. I can see UP using the 8444 on the excursions with 844.
Never mind, I don’t think they were put side by side by side for the public photo shoot, as it looks like this photo was taken later in the day then any of the others I have seen.
It was taken before the public shoot, as the Publics shoot they were staged on a curve of a wye not too much farther up the track from where they were in this shot.

They should have painted UP 8444 in the original Armour Yellow livery that was done in the late 1940’s. THEN it would look totally appropriate next to all those Heritage units. [:)]

First - Union Pacific rocks for having this program - no matter what you think of any individial engine or all of them, and furthermore, no matter what the original motivation may have been.
That being said, I found that picture comical simply because there are all these engines that any railfan would kill to have on the point, but what’s on the point? The one engine no one wants to see there, and that’s because a UP SD70ACe is always on the point.
