I never though I would see this, but om my way to work Monday morning. I saw two heritage units pulling a stack train. (There were three units, but the lead engine was in regular UP colors.) The units were MoPac #1982 and Katy #1988. Does anyone have any idea where these engines are heading and why?
They were thru here Saturday. Unfortunately I didn’t get previous notice of them coming as I would have went over to Gorham to get them. Looked like they entered Illinois in the mid-afternoon hours.
Right now they are running with SD70M 4859 ( I assume she was leading) on the ZYCHO-IHOYC runs from Yard Center to Houston. They arrived here in Houston yesterday morning on ZYCHOB 29- and will most likely cycle back north again on the next IHOYC. The ZYCHO trains normally use the Salem-Mt. Vernon-Gorham route southbound, and Chester-Dupo-Pana route northbound. Hope that helps.
How is the old B&O line these days? I grew up over by Olney, so I am familiar with that line. I was down there about a year ago and there seemed to be quite a few trains on the line.
I know the C&EI line is busy, so I would assume you see a few trains down there.
The C&EI line thru Johnston City and Marion mainly sees coal drags and locals with loads for the CO&E. Was in JC yesterday and didn’t catch any trains, only got pix of the old C&EI depot.
Well, it is occasionally busy, but not as busy as the C&EI central Illinois line going north-south through Salem. I believe it is seeing more traffic now than 50 years ago!!!
