If you look carefully, you will note that the locomotive is running on narrow gauge and meter gauge track.
Look in the foreground, and you can see that the tracks are dual gauge…meter on the outside rail, and narrow gauge with the inside rail.
We shipped them that locomotive, along with a bunch of former BN C30-7, and send them at least three to five NREX rebuilds a week, and lots of MRS rebuilds, everything from Santa Fe, BN to old Conrail and NS…we just shipped a pair of NS B23s to them…
They cast and manufacture their own narrow gauge trucks.
On the SD40-2s, they remove the three axle trucks, and install four, two axle trucks, an BB-BB truck set, for a 8 axle locomotive, not only better on the narrow gauge, but even increases the useable horsepower and traction.
This requires them to fabricate extensions on the front and rear porches, and install a long extension on the drawbar to get the extra truck under the frame.
Whats is really weird is seeing a Dash 9 on narrow gauge trucks, it looks like it should fall over on the first curve.
As of last month, they have purchased over 400 second hand locomotives from NREX, MRS, and Helm.
A friend of mine in Brazil is a big time rail fan, and because he is in the military, he has extra access to a lot of their stuff…he sends me photos all the time, I have one of a ex DRGW SD40-2 on the four trucks you would be amazed at how they have adapted the second hand rebuilds into a major fleet.
