Had to go to Bakersfield for business today - The UP main was smokin’ from LA to Portland. Lots of action. Have you noticed since UP took over this route (old SP) they make the local mills switch thier own cars. They all have private names on road switchers at these industries along Highway 99. Also what is the NILES RR in Bakersfield - Short line I presume, where to they run?
The only railroads in Bakersfield are UP, BNSF, and SJVR. There is a Niles Canyon Railway (part of a museum), if I remember correctly, in the east bay area. What did you see?
Did you notice that both locomotives at the JD Heiskell feed mill north of Pixley have the same number?
Boy, that’s going to be tough doing the Heiskell in DCC!
I always like stopping at Famoso, a junction 20 miles north of Bakersfield. There’s an old steam days water tank (SP steel) and pump house still in place. Also, a neat little a train order office there many years ago, I’ve built a model of it for my layout. Well worth a stop.
