up+ns

what do you think of a up,ns marger

merger? not likely.by the way welcome to the forums.

stay safe

joe

Over the years when the subject of the “final megamergers” comes up it has always been pointed out that Union Pacific splits it’s East /West interchange traffic 50/50 between CSX and Norfolk Southern and thus would have a lot to lose in any “true transcontinental” merger scheme…

i wouldnt like it. as NS is my favorite road. and i’d hate to see those black stallions disappear uner the armour yellow shadow

After CSX Jacksonville Breaks up the rest of the divisions…It becomes more possible for a “merger” if you please…

Naw - BNSF will play the ponies.

All US RRs will come under UP, the rest of North America will go to CN. That will be a sad day!

untill the mighty Mississppi dries up there will always be a “east” and a “west”

What makes you think the outcome won’t be black stallion locomotives?[:-,]

Not Likely-

BNSF would line up with CSX and that may start the monoply talk. If the D’s take the government in totality this fall it’s a sure loser.

In Dec., 2006 I was in Minot and I spoke with a BNSF conductor in the lobby of a hotel. He was waiting for the crew cab to take him out to the yard and I was waiting for the hotel shuttle to take me to the Amtrak station. He spoke with the greatest assurity that UP was in the process of finalizing a proposal to buy CSX, and BNSF was doing the same to acquire NS. We got started talking because I’d seen a westbound BNSF freight stop in town earlier with an NS secondary unit, and I asked how common that was that far west of Chicago. He claimed BNSF was providing a lot of power to NS since they seemed to be chronically power-short, and that was an indication of how bad-off NS is of late.

I don’t know how well-informed the conductor was, but he’d been with BN/BNSF for over 20 years and seemed pretty sure of his information.

If NS is power-short, it would likely be from excessive traffic.
I would not call that bad-off.

seems if BNSF has “…1000’s” of stored containter cars they would have dozens of extra engines

the ns is not bad off in fact we are doing extremly well. when people started seeing our power out west it was because we was leasing the new engines at that time, dash-9 engines and getting all the sd-40s that was after we took over conrail. we lease a sd-40 for 1k but lease a dash -9 back to them for 2k . but the word i have is that bnsf will merge with the ns. And the guys who inform me get the info from the people in the know…

That’s funny. Trust me, conductors would be the LAST employees to find out if a business decision of that magnitude would ever be made. Rank and file operating employees are often further out of the loop concerning railroad finances than many railfans LOL.

up until the labor negotiations to appease the rank and file that their jobs will be secure after said merger…then their all experts…i lived thru that with the Conrail split in 98…every conductor working out of Grand Rapids was an expert on the merger…and 50% said our jobs were ok the other 50% said we would get laid off…
