idahoshay, i am a HUGE UP fan, i have some books, vids, and dvd"s on UP. i have two black and white footage shots on the “sun valley”,(just checked the footage again to make this right.) ok in one shot the train consisted of: 1 E8a,1E8b,1 baggage,3 coaches, 1dinner, and 5 more coaches(no observation). in the other shot it was the same as the first only it had 2 baggage cars in front. its old black and white footage(1958), really quick, poor quality and far away. i slowed it down and zoomed,in hopes to get it right. good luck with the “sun valley”. i have in N scale a complete “city of LA” and the “train of tomarrow”. train of tomarrow is my fav. though UP only ran it in its true entirty for only one year, then it was broke up. glad to help a fellow UP fan.
Thanks, I’m modeling the UP in Idaho. I will run this train. When did the UP start running this train? It’s not listed in my 1954 schedule, but it was from April and Sun Valley is a ski resort.

If memory serves me right the SUN VALLEY was a ski train operation wintermonths from LA to the UP owned ski resort in Idaho. Special cars operated in these trains were the three baggage cars converted to recreation cars they had a raised bandstand at one end and a stand-up bar along one side. The three cars were 5714, 5715, and 5716. 44-seat leg rest coaches were carried and 48-seat dining cars and Lounge cars as well as prewar 4-4-2 and postwar 10-6 sleeping cars. In addition their was other baggage cars for carrying the ski’s and other equipment.
You might also pick up some copies of Streamliner magazine.
