I have just found out that the UP crews are now calling out Mileposts and Signals on the Blair&Fremont & Mo valley runs now. Is this due to the Derailment out west of Fremont just over two months ago. I hear this on my Scanner Radio alot. I mean this is something that the CSXT does.

They are probably calling out the locations of restrictive signals, not mileposts.

if they are doing what csx dose…then your not 100% right…we call ALL the signal indications…not just restricting signals… we dont use mileposts… we use signal names…(all the signals have a name …most for some geographical location or old station stop)… as well as direction of traval…and in muliti track territory…what track we are on… also the engin number and train ID…but UP could have modified thier calling signal rules to include the mile posts… which makes some sence…

I would suspect the UP would be more comfortable with calling mileposts than signal names. Numbers are at the center of their corporate soul.

The NS and CSX call signals here in NW Indiana.
CSX Engineer…it appears you have a much more formal method of calling the signals and indications. Much more defined than NS.
What are your opinions on this? Do you think it helps avoid dangerous situations? My guess is it might help in keeping crews alert in those nasty 3-5am hours.

It dont help keep crews awake. if your tired you will go to sleep regaurdless of calling signals. on the ns we call signal indication and milepost location( signal location is in milepost form) it helps solve incidents by listening to the tapes to see what the last signal was you called also.
UP is calling them by “Signals”.
I live on the B&O thru Tiffin and the crews call out what ever they feel like. Signal names, mileposts or both. They also identify themselves in various forms, engine # only, train # only or both. But one thing they are consistent about is calling what track they are on, even though I have heard a mix-up here and there, we are only human.
