UP SD70M paint update?

so i was looking through rrpicturearchives.net and i found this:

and i must say, has UP been listening to my older rants? because this new scheme…I LOVE IT!!!
i hope it stays for the newer units to come because it has a really cool look about it. is this a new scheme or just a one-of-a-kind locomotive?

Thats one of the ex-SP SD70M’s. For some reason they all came out looking different from the ones ordered by UP and somewhat different from each other. Maybe someone else can add some more info.

The people who painted them didnt know what they were doing. I heard that those were done by NRE, so that may be the reason. Alec

either that or maybe they thought like me. who knows? all i know is it’s a nice new look for UP that i like

I have seen a few SD60M repaints look like this also. It does look better than the usually UP paint scheme. The locomotive in your link would look even better in its old paint scheme.

Have all the ex-SP SD70s been repainted? I haven’t seen one in about 2 years now.

It looks like a variation of the current scheme to me,they just brouht the gray down a little further than it is now didnt they? They do look good when their clean tho,NICE ! [2c] Danny

in all my older rants about UP’s scheme, i said several times it would look better with more grey and less armour yellow. now seeing a pic like this, i see i was right!

All of the ex-SP engines have been painted this way, as well as a couple of the straight UP units in need of repainting for whatever reason. It’s just a difference in EMD vs. UP in how they should paint engines.

Not all of the ex-SP’s are painted that way, at least one or two have the flag decal on it. I think they used an old SD60M paint diagram and just stuck the lightning stripe in the bottom of it. Looks a little goofy to me.
