Leaking tanker car shuts down Huey P. Long Bridge

The Huey P. Long Bridge was shut down in both directions Wednesday morning after a railroad tank car began leaking while crossing the span.

According to Dennis Mayer with the Causeway police, the bridge was closed at 7:45 when the train stopped on the bridge after the leak was noticed.

Mayer said a Union Pacific rail car was leaking hydrated alumina, an irritant that can cause injuries if it’s inhaled or gets on your skin.

Drivers crossing the bridge notified police about the white substance spilling over the railroad tracks and onto the roadway.

Mayer said many drivers had their windows rolled up which prevented many injuries.

Police diverted traffic as hazardous material teams from the state and Jefferson Parish cleared the spill.

Officials don’t know what caused the rail car to leak, but Meyer said it’s an alarming reminder of the amount of materials being moved through the New Orleans area.

“We take freight trains and 18-wheelers for granted so much of the time and when something like this happens it takes us back into focus just how dangerous could be,” he said.

One driver was reportedly treated at a nearby hospital after he inhaled some of the hydrated alumina.

Both the east and westbound spans of the bridge reopened just after 10 a.m.

sorry about that
