UPDATE: Looking for Grade crossing info - First attempt

I’d like to add a few grade crossings to my early 40s NYC layout. I’m fairly confident of how to go about it and what one would would look like. Even so, I’d still like to see some examples anyhow.

What I’m keenly interested in is the wood planking in between the rails. Some of my crossings are going to be on curves. Does anyone know any good links for info/pictures on grade crossings? Thanks.

Tom

I just happen to have some pictures of a Curved, Wooden crossing.

I hope that helps. I took these a long time back for pretty much the same reason you need them.

Thanks, Jay! [:)][tup] That’s exactly what I’m looking for.

Jay & David,

Thanks again for the pictures and links! [:)] Below is my first attempt at a grade crossing, minus the road grade up to it:

I’m fairly pleased with the results. I may still play around with the width dimension some. More than likely I’ll end up making at least a half dozen of these grade crossings for my layout before it’s all said and done.

Anyhow, many thanks again for your help fellas…

Very nice looking Tom! I made one of those same kinds of crossing for a module I’m working on. They are pretty easy to make out of strip wood, and they looks pretty neat too. Nice job!

Afternoon all, Here a couple of pics of a grade crossing I built an my layout on the west banks of the river. I don’t know if this what you are looking for but it was made with water putty wuth some gray paint added in the mixture and then weathered with black chalk to make the tire markings. Hope these are some help. Mike

Thanks for the pics, Mike. Nice job on the crossings.

Mike, just a suggestion for helping those of us who still use dial up. Your pictures are terrific but each one is fairly large (~470K). In the future, if you could keep them in the 50-100K range, they’ll still look great for posting but won’t take so long to download.

Tom, really nice work. If I may, could I suggest that you bevel the outer edges of the planks, much like they were in the proto pictures provided earlier? I can think of nothing else that I would add or change…it all looks super! I can’t wait to see your finished product.

Thanks, Crandell. Your suggestion/observation is an excellent one. [:)]
