updated layout deisgn

Ok heres a track plan ive been working on
Details: This is a freelanced model based on western Pennsylavania owned by norfolk southern the area features wooded area with a small rural farming town called Bailey with the commodaties of grain and produce on the mainline theres going to be a lumber company as well, and a small yard to handel departing and arriving traffic of frieght witch will export grain, lumber, crops, produce and the imports: lumber, generaal goods, Gasoline. These are some of my future ideas of what the layout will be and what it will handel frieght wise there will also be passenger service as well to the future town of bailey, and heres the layout track plan.
Any comments welcomed

It’s looking pretty good. I noticed that there’s lots of places for two trains to pass on the right and upper sections of the plan, but nowhere on the lower and left sides of the plan. On purpose?

do you mean the right? if so im plannign to fix that problem with a cross over too the right hand side

Check out my post from a while ago.

I’m sorry, I’m backwards. The top and left have crossovers, the bottom and right don’t.

no problem, i realy dont think the bottum needs a crossover just the right and the left, correct if im wrong, but dont think its all that nessacery

No, it’s cool. I was just wondering if maybe the plan was for country scenery towards the lower right and the city towards the upper left, that’s all. Theres no switching to be done down there and it’s a double track main, so it’s cool.

the bottom is just farm land same with the pennisual the pennisula will lead to grain elevators and frieght depot maybe and the right will be a small mid size town

I was going to suggest you rotate the plan 90 degrees so the peninsula runs parallel to the long walls which would give you an extra foot of track but if those are industrial tracks and not a yard, that might not be that important to add the length. Also, you could add length to those tracks by extending the tracks in the lower right close to the wall like they are in the lower left. That would move the wye down and add a some more length to the peninsula tracks. The wye is the only place you can turn trains so I would think you would want to keep at least one of those peninsula tracks open so a short train or just the loco could be turned. If your operating scheme doesn’t require turning trains or locos, that might not be important.

I would also extend the drill track for the main yard farther around the corner since it appears you wouldn’t lose much real estate to do that. Ideally, it should have the same capacity as your longest yard track. Since your yard is single ended, trains leaving the yard to travel in a counter-clockwise direction will have to back out of the yard and a longer drill track would allow your longest train to back out of the yard in one move. As it is, your longest yard track is 7 sections while the lead track is only 3 sections long. A full length train leaving the yard to go in a counter clockwise direction would have to be rebuilt on the departure track in two or three moves. You could do it in one of the you lengthen that drill track to accomodate your longest train.

I also just noticed the aisle between the peninsula and the top section of benchwork appears to be only 15 inches wide. Even for one man operations, that is going to be tight and not a comfortable way to move around. I would narrow the top bench rather than shorten the peninsula to give more room there.

I just noticed something else. Trains leaving the yard in a clockwise direction can’t move directly out onto the main. They would have to do a switchback manuever and be backed onto

its not a yard just industrial spur for grain elevators

if worse comes to worse the center track is used for the turn around area but realy that wont be used very often

the drill track extends left further and the 3 section thing its realy the track to the engine serivice tracks witch are the two connected ones in the angle the track was supose to be connected to the mainline the switch got deleted ill haft to fix that and the 15 inches i remeasured ill haft to figure out how ill work on that and fix that not sure

im sry but im littel confused what your sayin if you wouldnt mind can you refrase
