been awhile since last post on the new layout. Managed to find a job and it was keeping me very busy.
layout has been redone (the boss wants to put the washer and dryer in the basment). this time i made 6 seperate table sections insted of 2 12 ft tables.
layout now comes out to about 12x9 so managed to get an extra foot on width buy rearanging the tables. As of yet nothing is permenant just doing alot of trail and error testing heh.
here is a few pics of the progress so far (this might be as far as it will get for now it will be moving to the attic when the one wall disappears up there).
abit more has been done on the second try but man its to much fun being able to run two trains on the same track with my son. so i have slacked off on the building aspect heh
Looks very good. What would the percent be for the grade? I’m guessing 3%. Enjoy the fun and time with your son. It all goes by to quickly.

grade percent is about 4 - 4.5 % it goes from 0" to 4" in a 84" run for now. my athearn swicher that has been remotered and and has had some weight added to it can push 8 fully loaded coal hoppers up it with a gp-? ( not to sure if its a gp-38 or what) it can do 14 coal cars.
as for the time going by quickly that is so true he is only 4 yrs old but it feels like he was just born last year. goes by to fast.

Iwhat you mean about stoping to play. It’s tough to stop the trains, and start the construction. My layout has been in the basic track plan with NO SCENERY for years.
I have good intentions though.
Keep up the posts on progress, and enjoy the time with your son.

It’s great to see another layout being built in an unfinished basement!
I have used the unfinished basement as an excuse for not starting a layout for so many years. Finally this past November, while planning out a full layout and determining time and cost headaches for finishing the basement, decided to forge ahead with the layout and forget about finishing the basement.
Instead of a room size 12’ by 22’ layout, I am building a shelf-style 16" by 16’ plan that Linn Westcott had in his 101 Track Plans.
I’ll post the details and links to some pics in a separate post.
Bottom line: Do with what one has! I’d rather be switching trains than putting up drywall!

I also have had to put mine up in an unfinished basement. I did put linoleum up and paint, but no ceiling. I also had to put the clamp style lights up. Part of the wall has a covered up window. However, the backdrop can be removed so that I can take two 40’ ladders out of it if needed. But for the most part, creative camera angels help with pictures and most people do not look up to see their is no ceiling. figured i would keep this all together but had a chance to do some work on ayout over the weekend. so far i like the turns out of some of the effects i tried for. here is few new pics of the area i worked on.
tryed out the ceiling tile rocks idea i saw around here and like the results better then what i did at first.
tryed out some watered down joint compound and paper towls here. again i like the results better then previous.
still need alot of touching up and color to get it to look like it does in my head which might be the hardest part lol.
Looks like you are going in the right direction, the stratification of the ceiling tiles adds a great texture effect close to the tracks.
