I keep looking at posters profiles to try to get an idea of whom I’m reading a post from, Most of the profiles are blank!!
You don’t have to post your Social Security number of bank account statement, just give us a hint as to who you are.
If you are a teen, it would be accepted that your modeling skills may not be up to Joe Fugate or Grampy’s Trains, and the rest of us may not tend to be so critical.
If you are posting a reply about DCC or other electronics, let us know if you are an electrical engineer, computer geek, or a retired carpenter like me!(Don’t believe a word I say about electronics!)
Where do you live - not your street address, just a state, province, or country, and a general area - north, south, etc, or NYC area, LA area etc. If you inquire about a LHS, train show, or railfan site, it helps to know where you are looking for these.
Just a few of my ideas - thanks for listening![:)]
Hello,I am a computer geek from Oskaloosa,Iowa and I have always loved trains.I currently model in HO Scale, but I am considering going to N Scale due to lack of space, and the possiblility of getting a smaller house and smaller basement for the layout.I also enjoy animals and taking photos. The house would b e shared by my wife and I.
I’ve notice that there is a human tendacy to outrageousness by some, when one can hide behind anonymity, and there have been a few instances of forum abuse going beyond ‘flaming’.
Profiles, or Monitors? (Editors note).
I think a filled-out minimalized form should be a requsite for membership. I dont think it’s too high a price to pay for a free forum. People tend to be on their better behavior when they are accoutable. I’ve read some contrary opinions (excuses), to which I say “Nonsense!”.
I too, like to know who I am talking to. I don’t need incrimating evidence. Feel free to disagree.
That’s my opinion and I’m stuck with it. What’s your excuse? Too much what? - work?
Galaxy, what I meant was to update the profile for your logo/signature stamp to the top left of every post. On every page of the forum, right under the MRR logo, in a light gray bar, is “update profile”. Click on this & fill in the info. BTW it’s nice to know more about everyone, but not necessary in the detail you provided. Thanks
Loathar, as the number one poster at this website, I trust you didn’t think it much of a burden to spend a couple of minutes to fill out your profile. [:-^]
With all due respect to lvanhen and Don Gibson, looking at their “filled out” profiles tells me very little, except lvanhen has a pic in his avatar.
A pic does not even tell me much about the author. This is NOT a dating site, so a pic is NOT a requirement.
Perhaps these two could start yetanother “what do you look like” thread.
I don’t have a pic here and don’t ever intend to post one. If I did it would be of my favorite loco, a PRR M1b. I don’t intend to use my real name either. If I get really chummy with someone here, I will provide that info to them then.
Otherwise, part of the internet is anonymous, and I choose to remain so here. It would seem very apparent that I am not alone in this.
Not quite, check mine I’m also number 1, as are a few others here, we just been here long enough to rack up some high postings , personally the “rankings” are rather pointless. I think they are intentionally that way so that there’s more than one #1 therefore no one is #1 [;)]
My profile is also filled out, more or less. Its not that hard to do fer petes sake…[swg]
Mine’s pretty well filled out–at least as much as I want it to be. However, I may have to go back and ‘up-date’ it from ‘Retired’ to ‘Active’ if I go back teaching part-time this August.
Galaxy, My profile says I live in Northern NJ, am a retired carpenter, and my interests are trains & woodworking. If someone posts a pic of their “train” that is poorly painted, out of focus, or toy like, I would like to know if the modeler is 10 or 40 years old - this would let me know to possibly help the 10 year old with a tip or two or ignore the post as a kook. If the poster wants to know where a LHS is, his general location will help - I don’t know any hobby shops in Alaska, but I can point you to a dozen good ones in my general area!! If he’s a teen, I’m not going to recomend a $800 brass loco for him to buy! I’m sure that there are some posters that we ignore for one reason or another - attitude, immuturity, bad breath or whatever!! Hey, it’s a free forum (at least for now!) so do as you wan’t - as long as you don’t swear or try to sell stuff!! My [2c]
My simple point would be this: Profiles still do not take care of some “assumptions” that still may be drawn from them, regardless of what they say. My profile already says I live in Upstate NY. If I wasn’t interested in trains I wouldn’t be on here. My signature says I model with HO and N. Is it anyone’s business that I’m on disability? Do you want that in my profile? Do I want that in my profile? As twhite said “‘Mine’s pretty well filled out–at least as much as I want it to be.’” So is mine.
I am not 15, but my skills may be just as rusty or underdeveloped. I just returne
Hi! My name’s R. T. POTEET! I live in the far, far reaches of the wild wild west. I am the forum’s resident genius. Now, do you know anymore about me than you did five minutes ago?
My name is Mark. My forum name is Tracklayer. I enjoy modeling the 1950s. I live in southeast Texas. Not to be rude but that’s as much info as anyone should require about me unless they’re the police doing an investigation…
i belive the about you page is all that is needed in this fourm… most things in our personal lives should not be made known… i can see the idea of knowing the general locations where we live as far as getting together and running trains on other peoples layouts. but the idea of others knowng if i have kids, what my career choises are if i have a college degree or age i see that is of no importance. just because my scrach building, electrical skills are propabaly the worst i have ever seen does not make me some 4 year old kid… that what makes this fourm great if you have a problem most people who have already dealt with it and may beable to help
