Upgraded Walthers HO 2-8-4 Berkshire with sound
I’m definetly adding the Bershire (NKP of course!) to my fleet!
Appears to be a great engine, however the road names leave me cold. Would like to see Great Northern also Northern Pacific.
On the C&O Kanawha the wrong pilot has been used. The loco now comes with a Pere Marquete pilot even though the original runs of the Kanawhas came with a very good correct C&O pilot. Walthers has a replacement C&O pilot assembly which they supplied to me free of charge. Switching the pilot assembly is a little involved but I got mine changed OK after considerable effort.
I’ve been looking at these Berks/Kanahwas for a while. Now with the info packed for the new models, this generation by far sounds like the best to get. Do other models come with the traction tires?
it would be interesting to see which of the three come closest to mataching the berks run by the Boston & Maine.
I purchased the NKP version of this berkshire and I am very disappointed with the whistle! It is nowhere close to the 765.How would Iknow? I attended the Fort Wayne NKP 765 Open house in August of 2006 and the sound is nowhere to being close! I can’t understand how QSI could not get it right.
I looked at one at the local hobby shop and decided not to buy as they blew it on the Mars light, come on guys, the light wasnt a orange or yellow but a bright white light. The whistle is more of an “at speed” rather than standing still or slowly moving sound. You would think, espicaly with a locomotive that is still running, QSI/Proto 2k would get the mars light and whistle correct. I will wait for a 3rd release as I am sure if enough folks complain, a corrected version might get made.
I want to see which ones resemble the original, 1st run A1 versions that ran on the old Boston and Albany mainline over the Berkshire mountains of Massachusetts, for which THIS locomotive was named.
I want one but will wait for the Mars light and sound correction. Atlas just came out with an NKP caboose so now I’ll just wait for the engine to be right.
I hear that the NKP 2-8-4 has a NKP authentic Whistle!
I have the 2004 model and put in a sound decoder - wrks and sounds great. I wonder if Walthers would send me a set of traction tire drivers and if so would they work on my older engine?
This is one of the best detailed NKP Berkshires on the market today including most brass models. It is a great looking model and with the traction tires, it will handle a good sized train. The orange colored mars light is goofy, but it can be changed out to a clear white.
Best there is for the money. The QSI is great.
