Upgrading an Atlas Signal Tower

A quick and easy way to upgrade any plastic model is to add roof shingles and paint. These simple changes can make any model unique to your railroad.

For this Atlas tower, I added Campbell’s profile shingles and re-painted it using Floquils’s Depot Buff (walls), and Roof Brown (windows and trim).
Painting a plastic model greatly improves its appearance by removing that plastic “toy-like” shine. To simulate the mortar lines on brick walls, use any good brick color paint such as boxcar red mixed with a touch of engine black. Once dry, paint over the entire wall with a waterbase white. Then wipe of the face of the wall (while white paint is still wet) using a clean wipe. This will leave traces of mortar lines behind. Then finish up with a flat finish (dull coat)

Bob, nice transformation

Another way to bring out the mortar lines is to rub a little white or grey chalk on the bricks, moisten your finger and rub the chalk off. This leave s the chalk in the mortar lines. Once the structured is weathered, spray it with Dull-Coat or Matt-Fini***o fix the weathering.

Bob,
That is one nice scene.

Bob,
I would like to see more photos of your layout. You are demonstrating some extraordinary modeling skill in that single little scene. Thanks.

Bob,

Great, as always.

If you don’t mind, I’ll show my Atlas Tower:

Rather then replacing the shingles, I drybrushed them.
