Upgrading Simple Plastic Kits (pics)

Just finished detailing these passenger cars. The coaches started out as simple “shake the box” roundhouse kits I picked-up at a train show for around 4 bucks. Except for the car sides, both roofs and undersills were repainted (Floquils Engine Black) to match my railroad’s paint theme. The interiors of the cars were detailed by adding seats, passengers, wood floors, and pot belly stove. Truss rods were upgraded from thread (comes with kit) to mono-filiment fishing line. This eliminates the fuzzy members of the thread from standing out when painted. Roofs were detailed using Grandt Line castings. Grab irons were formed by hand using brass wire I had on stock. The safety chains are from Builders in Scale.

Here are some pics showing how they turned out.
Bob…

beautiful

Very nice,…once again!

Pretty cool. I am working on a Dome car and I’m adding the detail just like you are.

Nice pics!!

Very nice. It is good to have detail people on board.

Man, the little folks that live on your layout are lucky to have you. Thanks for all these photos.

Fantastic work Bob, a beautiful layout indeed, its work like yours that inspires me to get back at it, and gives me a very high goal to aim for.

Have fun & be safe,
Karl.

Again, Bob your work and eye for detail is superior. Always a pleasure to view.

Bob, wonderful as ever! Do you have an interior shot with the roof off?
