upper/lower decks

I built a single level benchwork for my layout. About a year into my project my wife and I moved. Now my layout is in the garage and I have a lot more space to expand… I didnt plan much of a yard the first time around, but I plan on adding one now. How hard would it be to build under an existing table. Or should I add the yard to my expansion? Hidden or not?? Also if you could help me out with track design on the yard… two track entrance with for to six holding tracks

Are you talking about a traditional yard (for sorting cars, building and breaking down trains) or a staging yard?

How far will the yard area and the deck above be separated?

If there’s 16" or more separation from the lower level to the bottom of the upper AND you keep the lower deck’s depth within reason (less than 18") what you have in mind is possible. But it might not be a lot of fun.

How will you light this yard area?

Will this yard area be easily accessible for yard operations?

BCSJ… I would like and online yard to fiddle with trains, sorting, building. etc… But I would also like a staging yard for final destination trains… Upon further review of my benchwork, I don’t really think I want to build under… So I’ll add a staging yard at track level, probably hidden. I have about 6 feet x 2 feet for an online yard… I’m starting on my steam service facility, and would like the yard to be in that same area. My hidden yard will be stub ended with 4 storage tracks… Probably to hold trains about 10 cars long plus engine… any ideas would be great. thanks

Building is not a real issue if you have the skills. For me the issue is how are you going to get from one level to the next. Are you going to going to use a helix or are you going to travel a couple times around the garage to get to the lower level?
