Is it just me or did UP inherit SPs knack for letting locos get dirty beyond belief.
Befor the merger UPs locos were kept relativly clean. Now it seems they are getting dirtier by the day. I know UP has more important things to worry about right now, but this didn’t happen over night.
Im telling you! Im just starting to see the same thing here on the UP too. I saw just two just this evening. wow! You talk about DIRTY! BNSFrailfan.
Gee… Whats the difference[?]
[V][:O][banghead][tdn] Its just not acceptable.

While it is difficult to answer definitively as an outsider, the railroad has been known to operate backwards from the bottom line. In light of recent financial hits taken by the railroad and its dirty diesels, I sometimes wonder if they might have to make a “filing” of some sort …
One day about 25 years ago I had occasion to look closely at SP, ATSF and UP locos.
The SP were filthy
The ATSF were clean
The UP painted over the dirt
With the tunnels on the SP, it seemed like they would leave a locomotive in a tunnel and let it run awhile.
Did ya ever think its because they dont sit still in one place long enough to be washed?
Man, UP is so short of power right now…washing them is the last thing they have time for…
We got trains stacked three and four deep waiting to get yarded…
And BNSF aint that high on the wash and wax list…the only clean BNSF motors I have seen in a while were a pair of shop queen GP30s, and a few new AC4400s…and BNSF is a little tight on power too…their running a SD9 (former GN) on yard transfers, still in its original BN black and green, and 1970s dirt…
Guys, to us in the business, locomotives are just tools…like a bulldozer or a dump truck…
Yes, most of us do prefer clean shiney locomotives, but if the choice is moving trains, or washing locos…

Is that top picture drawn, or is that a real picture?
And here I thought that railroads weathered their locomotives to make them look more authentic. [;)]
A dirty loco pulls just as good as a clean one, probably better cause the weight of the dirt gives it betterer adhesion.
There saving there $$$$$ so they can double track the Sunset Route, unclog El Paso & build theconnector at Edelstein IL. [:D]
Yes, it is real. Surprising, isn’t it[:O]
Yes it is since I always thought the UPRR wanted to create a pretty image for themselves. I saw brand new ones that I have on video of arriving in Vegas from Yermo. [:)][:p]

Oh Dan![V]
Does Floquil and Polly S “Grime” come in 55 gallon drums?
They did inherit SPs tunnels. I’m sure that had something to do with it.
Very funny. I’d like to see those shop queens [:p]
Yeah…but I like it…actually the bright Armor Yellow & Harbor Mist Gray (when they’re brand new) is a little much.
The yellow engines in the top picture are just too bright[8D].They had to throw some dirt on them to tone it down a little.I believe the tunnels have a lot to do with dirty engines. The D&RGW has lots of tunnels, but kept thier passenger power clean. As an SP fan I love seeing dirty UP power[}:)][:D]!
