UPS Louisville plane crash

Balt in that American Airlines DC10 crash the engine had been changed March 29 and 30th almost 2 months before losing the engine on May 25th and had flown 341 hours since the engine replacement per the NTSB report it’s on page 81 of the finsl report I’m going to link here in a second.

Or let’s not forget about another famous failure in a DC10 United flight 232 that crashed in Souix City Iowa in 89. The engine in question had been in service 6 months before the fan disc came apart.

I’m leaning towards the engine ate something on the runway for that big of a fire.

I saw it suggested that the #2 engine ate parts from the #1 engine as it departed the aircraft.

As for the amount of fire, the aircraft was fully fueled for a trip to Hawaii - that fuel got spread over an area a half mile long, obviously igniting structures, vehicles, and who knows what else.

At least one report said one of the places it crashed into was some sort of a oil recycling center, which apparently had like tanks of oil that pretty much exploded on impact.

One pilot I saw on YouTube who had flown these planes said that the plane was flying level and lifting off as seen in the one video showing it going down the runway, but that once the engine fell off, the plane dipped down and to the left due to the other two engines (tail and right wing) still thrusting at full power. Unfortunately, that moment isn’t caught on the video of the plane going down the runway on fire.

Brings back bad memories!

We had a friend who died on the United Iowa flight. Terrible crash with plane pinwheeling.

I believe there was an Air Florida DC-10 at MIA’s extended runway where the #1 engine separated much the same as American but the Captain aborted the take off. Have not been able to get a report on that incident. This runway at MIA was the one where the FEC connection rail line to CSX was moved to the west.

I avoid that airport specifically because the support staff on the ground is so lazy and rude…makes me wonder about the aircraft servicing. I have to say this is my increasing conclusion about South Florida Airports as the one near the West Coast for Fort Meyers was starting to fall down the list a bit as well.
