Can anyone recommend a source for typical single and multiple family town/city houses in HO scale?
Welcome to the forum. If you have not found the Walther’s Catelogue, that is the first wish book for any modeler. Then try Ebay with [HO building], but be careful, not everything there is good quality or fair price.
Have you tried Walthers website? it’s http://www.walthers.com/
For urban businesses to go with the residential buildings, Bachmann Spectrum had some beautiful buildings. (I think they were made by Heljan). These buildings show up regularly on ebay.
When you visit Ebay, just type Bachmann Spectrum in the search box.
I like DPM (Design Preservation Models) kits. They take a bit of work to assemble, paint and weather, but I think they exactly fit the small-scale urban landscape. These are two copies of one of the Townhouse buildings:
And this one is what they call the First National Bank:
There are quite a few urban housing options. Depots by John has what they call “Windy City” series of models. They are copies of some models they produced for the layout at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. They aren’t cheap but they look very nice.

DPM makes three townhouse kits and they also offer the three fronts of each building in one package as flats.

Atlas also offers some nice single family homes. Kate’s Colonial Home, Kim’s Classic American Home and Barb’s Bungalow. You can get all three of these in either a kit or as built-ups. They call them the Lovely Ladies Home Series.

Walthers offers several single family houses that would work for urban housing. They also offer the Bralick Building which is a good representation of a modern loft conversion.

Other than those, try the Walther’s catalog or website as others have suggested.

nygould - Good afternoon If you do not mind me asking, How have you been able to never ever post a topic or respond to one since you have been a member here for almost 4 years(7/2002)? Wow that is weird. Did you just find the website after years of not being around or just get a new computer. Well enjoy
Maybe he had nothing to say before now… not everyone has to wave a flag on their first day… or first four years [:D]
