Hi all, I am bring my 84 year old dad to the US in September to visit North Platte. We arrive in LA on the 11th September & will be visiting in Missouri from around the 22nd till we return on the 25th. He is a former railway guard here (30 years ago). I wouldd like to take him to visit railroad related exhibitions, model, live steam etc on the west coast before we head to North Platte and I am looking for suggestions. Travel arrangements are flexible as I have driven on other occasions whilst visiting, so we can fly/drive. My email address is brad@donovanelectrical.com.au. Thank you for you suggestions in advance, Brad Donovan.
Posting early as you did allows time for good planning.
The Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona, California (running from September 5-28, 2008) has an excellent exhibit of historic steam engines and diesel power, including Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4014, and UP DDA40X “Centennial” #6915.
Two great, large model train layouts are also at the Fair.
The Fair is also reachable by Metrolink, the Los Angeles vicinity’s commuter rail agency.
Also, in San Diego, California, Balboa Park not only has the San Diego Zoo and science building exhibits, but also several large model train layout, including one of the famous Tehachapi Pass.
Hi, thats great, thanks. I have a big list to wade through, but the fair sounds interesting & worth a visit.
Thanks again,
Brad
