US tie spacing and Peco track

I am aware that Peco track is based on European prototypes and the tie spacing is different from the US - can you tell me how tie spacing is different from the UK? How different is Atlas Code 50 track from Peco’s?

At present I intend to use Peco on my N gauge layout of the SP Coastal Division, in the transition period. Atlas track is expensive and difficult to get in the UK. However, I would be interested to know how US practice differs. - so it would be intriguing to hear views. Can I alter the Peco to look more prototypical or is it not worth the bother?

I am also aware that the turnout angle is slightly different from US practice - but I am less concerned about this, I think.

Best wishes and thanks in advance. Peter Harris

In the US, Peco code 83 HO-scale track conforms to US crosstie spacing practice, and UK style is also available.

Yes - I will look at the Code 83 to see how it differs from the UK ties in the Code 75 - but I am modelling in N gauge - so no Peco product is available, I think.

PETER:

If you are in ‘N’ gauge you will have to use what is commercially available, or ‘roll your own’ - so to speak.

N gauge should have code 55 rail to ‘look’ right. Manufacturers use whatever they buy in bulk. If you are ‘parsnikity’ enough to want scale rail, ties, and US spacing, you can . ‘Hand lay’ Products are available:

If you are starting out, check out what is AVAILBLE. Kato N scale track gets high marks - whatever the tie spacing. (Check out the October MR cover for appearance of Peco code 75).

In the final analysis it REALLY becomes a question on 'what’s good enough?
