used copies of Trains magazine

I’m just curious how some of us dispose of our copies of Trains magazine. I can’t believe many of us just pitch this interesting and beautiful magazine into the wastebasket, so what do you do with your unwanted copies of the magazine? I give mine to a friend. Does anyone leave his copies in the doctor’s office, or some such place? Give them to kids or young railfans? Who gets creative about this?

All of mine are in the “stacks” upstairs. One of these days I’ll find someone who can put them to good use (or else I’ll just sell them at a train show). Same goes for my fire service magazines.

That is a problem…I’d wager not many of us simply discard them. I know I never have knowingly. So mine too, are boxed and at times wonder what I could do {one of these days}, to locate them someplace useful to someone.

A couple years ago Murphy Siding (sn) gave me a ton of his old magazines, and I have to say that really put me over the top as far as knowledge goes. No longer was I a blue eyed musuem volunteer, I knew what was going on!

I do not subscribe but purchase only the ones that have articles about railroading in the Southeast. Needless to say, that leaves me with very few magazines to warehouse. Back in the 80’s I started accumulating sportscards at an alarming rate and soon realized I needed to narrow my focus or I would run out of storage space. Same thing applies to magazines. If it doesn’t fit my particular interest, it doesn’t come home with me.

I have most if not all of my Trains magazines since 1970. It is nice to refer to them once in a while.

I cycle them to family , leave some at work and sell lots on ebay. I may not get much but I don’t throw them away.

I just got them shelved in the closet. Go back to 1964! Classic Trains from the getgo, too!

I have many boxes full of them from way back in the mid 1970’s and my bride urges me to get rid of them every time we clean up our basement but NO WAY…I usually go into the stacks about once a year and reminisce.

I have my copies in teh vault, protected by armored dogs with rabies…nah, but I keep mine safely stacked away. The thought of actually throwing them away is horrifying. I’d at least think someone who doesn’t want them would at least give them away.

Every now and then I’ll pull an old copy out just for amusement’s sake - comparing then to now.

Speaking of keeping back copies, how many of you have kept the indices for all the years you have subscribing? As many of you may remember, the index for the previous year would be bound with perhaps the March issue of the next year, but for several years now it has been published on line. I just looked, and saw that last year’s has not yet been put on line.

I have all the issues from the only one I bought at a newstand (and immediately began subscribing, as soon as I could rake the $3.00 or $4.00 together for a year’s subscription).
