I have a slew of Athearn blue (and yes, yellow) boxes. They come in handy for storing small parts, tools, etc. The problem I ran into was that because they fit so tightly, they are a regular pain in the backside to open. I simply glued tabs made from cardstock to the bottom of the box. Then, it’s simply a matter of holding the lid, and pulling the tab.
If you look closely, you can see Scotch tape in the photo; I only use it to hold the tab in place until the glue sets. I use Elmer’s Spray Adhesive to secure the tab.
I have not re-used my boxes yet, but I have grabbed a bunch of coin tubes to hold parts. I grabbed an assortment from a swap market at 3 for a $1 and want to grab more dime tubes for different sized screws, while quarter tubes works good for assorted detail parts for a particular engine until I get to it. I used a labeler and put the particular engine on it and as I grab the parts I want, I drop them in the tube. It keeps them all together and helps keep me from either loosing them or forgetting about them, plus the fact the tubes are clear and sealed.
Kadee also sells their plastic boxes seperately, I don’t know what they charge now but I picked up a bunch of them back when they first came out at $1.00 each and have been using them ever since, they’re nice because they’re “clear” so it’s easy to see what’s in them.
