This was just a thread on the JMRI Yahoo group. What sort of problem are you having? What DCC system and how is it connected to your computer?

Using Digitrax zypher, through ms100, and the program crashes. It worked on windows 98. I can’t figure it out. It crashes everytime you try to set the prefferances in the program ( what connection you are using.) and then can’t set correctly when restarted.

Copy the messages from the “dos” window and post them in the previously-mentioned JMRI Yahoo! group, along with all your other relevent info: Zephyr, MS100, Java version, JMRI version, etc. Also post specifics about the computer you’re using: Does it have a “real” serial port or are you using a USB-serial adaptor?

The folks who actually write the JMRI code drop in there on a regular basis, so nothing against this forum but your chances of getting help with JMRI will be much better over there.

I’ll almost guarantee it won’t work with an MS100. The MS100 requires an oddball baud rate to duplicate Loconet and Vista will not allow the direct hardware access to the serial port to do that.

There’s one thing you can try, if you right click the icon there is an option to run the program in various compatibility modes. I know XP is one of them, you can try that. I don’t recall if there is an option to run a program as if it was Windows 98, but if there is, try that as well.

Well, Finally got the answer, a driver for the ms100 needs updated, and so far there is not one for it. Thanks to all for the help. Ricky

Um, the MS100 by itself does not have any drivers. It’s merely a passive level shifter that takes the Serial Port’s signal and “shifts” (converts) it to a signal suitable for LocoNet use.

Whatever software you use to communicate with the Loconet via the MS100 is what drives the serial port, so as Randy has noted, it may be that Vista will not let JMRI/Java set the correct baud rate.

Or are you attempting to use it with a USB to Serial Adapter? If so, those drivers could be the source of the problem. But using an MS100 with a USB to Serial is a shaky proposition no matter what OS you’re using.

Either way, you’ll be far better off getting a LocoBuffer USB. Vista drivers are available for that device, and as the name implies it solves a lot of other possible problems with it’s buffering: http://www.rr-cirkits.com/
