Using N scale tank car on HO layout?

I’m looking for some horizontal storage tanks for a chemical plant or fuel dealer (not sure which yet). I thought about using an N scale tank car (without the trucks and wheels, of course). That way it would sit on the ground. I’d put some chocks on it (concrete looking).

What are your opinions? Would the N scale look OK.

Thanks,
Ron

Why not?

i think it would be fine, a good idea really. though if you needed more then a couple it could be costly.

Unless you picked up some Bachmann junkers on eBay or at a show.

I feel a smaller than scale object is always better than larger than scale. I always look at the discount stores for same size stuff(HO in my case) I found some 1/72 scale semi’s @ Walmart for $2 each yesterday.(if they where true scale they would have cost $20 each) but I think they still look OK. I got two little John Deere tracktors today(about 1/95 scale) and they look even better!!! Liscenced John Deere products for $1.50 each!
Smaller is better in my opinion.

I’ll agree with that. I find that, for myself at least, I can usually see something that is of a larger scale, and then it stands out too much and distracts my attention. Now, if it is for perspective purposes, that’s fine, but a car or something annoys me.[:p]

But, there is no reason why an N scale tanker wouldn’t look okay, as long as you dress it up as a stationary tanker, instead of a railroad one. You’ll have to take pictures and show us the result.[:D]

It might be cheaper and easier to find an Athearn undecorated tank car kit. Local hobby shops here in Arizona still have hundreds of the older Athearn blue-box kits in stock. Nearly all the N-scale rolling stock I have seen offered is already assembled, and it might be harder to take one apart than to put an Athearn kit together.

I like this idea, I have an N scale tank sitting some where i think i might use.

This might be the best use for a Bachmann-Lifelike-Model Power tanker. You may find one at the LHS for $2.99. Many stores use them for loss leaders. Just be sure to remove any capacity lettering. THe tank won’t hold 10K of product in HO. 5K would be more like it. It may look good to have the product name showing thru the rust & grime.

Should work out just fine as tanks come in all sizes. I used one on my old layout as a propane looking tank and used a cut off piece of a paper clip bent into an L-shape to represent piping going from the tank into a medium sized, brickstructure.

On that layout I also used a Rix grain bin, but an N-scale one on a farm scene as many times farmers have a small grain bin or two on their farms. It looked good and certainly not out of place, in fact it fit right in. I’m surprised no one has done this before…well at least on layouts I’ve seen.
