Using NCE to reset decoder values

I am using NCE Power Cab and need to reset a locomotive to the factory settings. The locomotive is a Bachmann Spectrum and it has sound. It worked originally and now doesn’t. I’m afraid I may have inadvertently reset something. It works on DC. Looks like I should be able to us CV8 to reset. What am I doing wrong?

It depends upon the type of decoder and whether it was factory equipped or an after-market installation by a user. Bachmann Spectrum initially factory installed Soundtraxx Tsunami sound decoders but later moved to TCS WOW sound decoders. If CV8=8 doesn’t reset the decoder, try CV30=2.

Also, I seem to recall that power to the locomotive needs to be interrupted for the reset to “take.” I could be thinking of something else, though.

There are situations where that is true. So, after trying to reset with CV8=8 and CV30=2, tilt one side of the locomotive off one rail that the wheelsets are sitting on and then place that side of the locomotive back onto the rail from which it was lifted.

Just to avoid potential confusion, he means ‘locomotive and tender together’…

You can also cut power to the track for a moment, for example if you’ve wired a program track with DPST center-off to serve as a DC test track.

I tried changing both CV’s. it did not work. Do I need a dedicated programming track or can I just use the NCE command “Program on Main”?

Yes, you can Program on the Main (POM), and that is the usual way to do it with the Power Cab. When you do a reset POM, the locomotive should be powered up but idling, not moving. Otherwise, the reset won’t take.
