USS South Dakota was never completed. It 38.5 percent complete when it was scrapped on Nov 10, 1923. It was completely dismantled by Nov. 29,1923 .[:)]
[#oops]Sorry about the mix up there were two classes of the South Dakota. The first class was being built in 1922 when orders came down to scrap them. They were the South Dakota BB-49, Indiania BB-50, Monyana BB-51, North Carolina BB-52, Iowa BB-53, Montana BB-53, and Mass. BB-54. They were all scrapped in 1922. The second set were all built starting in 1939 with South Dakota BB-57, Indiania BB-58, Mass. BB-59, and Alabama BB-60. South Dakota was scrapped in 1962, andIndiania in 1963. The Mass. was turned into a memorial in 1965, and the Alabama was turned into a memorial in 1964.
This information is on navsource.org Look it up. [:)]
I’ll take your word for it. 'Never heard of an earlier USS South Dakota. I’m guessing the original was scrapped as part of the Washington(?) Treaty of 1923? I’ll still offer up my challenge to Dale the map junky: See if you can find USS South Dakota (or what’s left of it ). [;)]
Charlie, thank you for the web site reference. I was able to look the Raven up. This ship (AM55) is of interest to me since one of my brothers joined her in North Africa as radarman in 1944, and was separated from her in April of 1946. I had had the impression that she never swept for mines after he joined her (he never spoke of actual sweeping), but now I know that I was mistaken. My brother brought us some souvenirs from North Africa and Sicily when he came home after being discharged. He gave us a photograph of a sister ship since he was not able to get a photograph of her, but there is a picture of her in his Bluejacket’s Manual, which he gave to me.
As I recall, my brother went to North Africa on the transport USAT George Washington, which I also found.
No thanks needed. I came accross the site while I was looking up a couple of ships that I actually was on, during my time in the Marine Corps. Glad to havebeen able to assist you in your search.
