Can anyone tell me about these strange locos[?] they almost look like a SD70 with a modified cab.[banghead]
These units were built by Morrison Knudsen using a Caterpillar 3600 series diesel engine rated at 5000HP, and they used Montreal Locomotive Works style trucks.
The Utah Railway purchased all six units, three had been in MK colours and three (older and slightly shorter, were lettered for Southern Pacific, who tested them in service.
After the Utah had ben running them for some years, they had MPI (successor to MK) rebuild them with new hoods and engines removed from SD50 type locomotives.
That’s why they look like an EMD SD with an odd cab. The cab is the only original section above the frame!
