Paul Thompson elevated to international president
CLEVELAND #8211; United Transportation Union Assistant President Paul C. Thompson will assume the duties of the Office of President of the UTU following the March 2 decision of the UTU International Executive Board to suspend from office President Byron A. Boyd Jr. The UTU Constitution provides for Thompson#8217;s elevation.

The International Executive Board found Boyd guilty of violating the UTU Constitution and ordered he be #8220;suspended#8221; from office #8220;without wages#8221; and #8220;for the duration of your current term.#8221; The board found Boyd guilty of violating the UTU Constitution with regard to hiring and directing of UTU employee Ralph Dennis, who pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of racketeering, fraud, bribery and embezzlement. Dennis awaits sentencing.

The board also ruled Boyd#8217;s suspension #8220;will automatically be revoked#8221; and that Boyd would be reinstated with all lost wages if he is found not guilty of federal criminal charges currently pending in Houston, Texas, or if the charges are dismissed. That trial is scheduled to begin March 22.

Separately, UTU General Secretary and Treasurer Dan Johnson was found by the International Executive Board #8220;not guilty#8221; of charges of violating the UTU Constitution and was specifically exonerated.

#8220;It is with heavy heart that I assume the duties of president,#8221; Thompson said. #8220;Byron Boyd#8217;s vision at the negotiating table gained for our members unprecedented job security and an improved standard of living. This was accomplished in the face of Republican control of the House, Senate and White House, which has emboldened employers elsewhere to cut employment, wages and health care.

I was an Almagmated Transit Union member when I worked 15 years at a transit authority. We went through some major struggles also. For a while I believed that unions in the transportation industry were no longer needed as some of the bargained agreements seemed odd or obsolete. But after a few years, I witnessed various workers unjustifiably harassed or terminated by managers. These managers, I felt, were acting unprofessionally due to vindictiveness. Managers came and went and some of the “hot shots” wanted to make an impression on upper management. It’s sad that they didn’t use their energies to motivate and unite instead of trying to divide and conquer- which almost succeeded in the late 80s!

The union itself went through tulmutuous times, like any other institution. One of our strongest presidents was “allegedly” paid off and suddenly moved away. But, til this day the ATU remains stable. I am very conservative by nature, but I agree 100% that unions are needed and strong ethics from the leadership and membership are mandatory to be respected and successful.[tup][:)][:D][^]
