I’m finishing my 18 x 16 layout room and have a question about valances. I’m installing a drop ceiling and want to know if the standard grid will support a masonite valance and 48" flourescent fixtures. How do you attach it to the grid? Any thoughts or suggestions?
I would check with the manufacturer of your drop ceiling. There are usually all kinds of accessories, including lights (flourescent and pot), hooks, clips and so on that may help you.

In a commercial application the easy way to support extra weight is a heavier wire in that area (wire that hangs the grid). the grid it self is designed for added loads of defusser (a/c) AND drop in lights. Also to instal a down light you just cut the tile and drop it in, NO you have to put a support between the grid and cut the tile and drop it in. In the area where th valance is you can DOUBLE the hanger wire and no problem. The ultimate is to use drop wires of a heavier gauge all thw ay form the main ceiling. If you are 2x4 that is a litlle more of a pain than 2x2 grids.
