Value of the toy trains I have

I got in the wrong forum and ask this question and they directed me to this forum. I know NOTHING about trains! I purchased quite a few from a lady whose husband had passed away and needed the money. I want to sell them on ebay but don’t know anything about the “Scale.” She told me the Gray trains was more valuabale. They are all New York Central (the gray ones)and I have five of them $466, 9800,4861, 8001 and 2912. They are 1 1/4x10 and an inch wide where the wheels are. I have several smaller box cars also. He was making a town and had alot of medal vehicles too. I gave her quite a bit for the lot and would like to recop some of my money. I don’t begrudge giving her the money because I know she needed it. I just would like to know what a fair value might be. I know it’s hard without seeing them. Thanks so much for your time. Bonnie

What are the details like? Do they have any distinguishing marks on the fuel tanks? Post some pics if you can…

You might have better luck on the Classic Toy Trains Forum. In addition to the stock #s you gave they’d need to know the manufacturer (Lionel, American Flyer, etc)

Are those the stock numbers or the engine numbers?
Were they the same in thise days? I know they were with Lionel.

If the bodies are 1.25" wide and 10" long, that’s kind of small for O tinplate. It would help a great deal if you could post photos of what you have–that will provide a lot more information than your description. From what you posted you could have just about anything…

1-1/4" tall, 10" long, and 1" wide ? Sounds like HO-scale locomotives to me.

As to their value… we’d need to know the manufacturer and approximate age. A recent Ebay seller sold a Tyco diesel loco for $109 USD (starting bid was $99 USD). Not to say that this seller’s experience (luck) is indicative of what you would get; but you can probably sell each loco for a nice sum of money (depending on manufacturer, age, and condition). If you have a local hobby shop (LHS) or model railroading club, try asking about their value there.

By the way, since you plan to sell them, you should make sure they actually work.
