Varney Aerotrain Build - HO DCC

This will be a placeholder for my next project after the 4-4-0. 2 full NOS Aerotrain kit sets and one powered chassis. I have ordered the power chassis and coach chassis from Bowser alread and they ahould be here in a couple days! The goal will be a full set super detailed running DCC and sound. The other set I will sell off with the original powered chassis after I clean it up.

Not starting it yet but I was excited to check these warlocks out! They look like a super fun build, lots of work to do so they are beautiful…can’t wait.

It’s going to look nice with its big brother…

Do you have the brass parts for the suspension detail on the coaches?

I haven’t really checked out the coaches beyond making sure they where all still in their sealed plastic bags. I assume whatever they originally came with is whats in there. I have seen a video where somebody had the side vents and cab sides that looked to be castings installed before painting. It would be cool to get ahold of any super detail parts though! Just for fun I did file and join the locomotive halves so I can get an idea of what kind of seam deletion I have in store for me

I love seeing Aerotrain models! I have a real one in my local train museum, and I built one out of LEGO myself, though it doesn’t / can’t run, much to my annoyance. (too much friction in curves with the wheel arrangement) Good luck on your journey to make it run!

I got bored soldering and routing wires so I shifted to something fun(?) Getting rid of seam lines! A little more touch ups to do when my new batch of 2000-3000 grit sponges get here tomorrow, then it should be ready for some nice smooth aluminum…

What putty do you use?

I used Mr. Cement to give a melt ridge to file down. For the gaps that were too big for that I used Vallejo Plastic Putty.

Ooo this’ll be fun! I have to ask, which road will you be doing?

What a fun project! The art work on the boxes appears very similar to the boxes for Atlas structures ( water tower, etc.). Do you know what years these kits were produced? I have a lot of vintage H0 kits, many were gifted to me by a gentleman getting out of the hobby. They are fun and very nostalgic to have and build!

Thanks. Always looking to pick up new techniques!

The Vallejo is probably one of the best I’ve used. Comes in a tube that you can apply direct or thin with water and paint on. Or, you can get it pre thinned in a paint pot. Its acrylic.

I’d have to do a little digging but maybe somewhere in the 1950’s. I like the old stuff…especially Triang trains, its more satisfying to get something old in horrific shape and make it sometimes better than new!

Hit it with some 3000 grit sponge and I am happy with where it is at right now. Pretty sure I can lay down a nice aluminum finish with the airbrush now. Looks like the powered and coach chassis should arrive by Wednesday. I wish Bowser sold some other parts for these things…

So my powered chassis and coach chassis came today. I have to say I am underwhelmed. While its extremely nice to have something to start from, these are going to need a lot of work to be usable. The wheels on the back of the powered chassis are so small it actually sits sagging in the back…easy fix was putting on some 36" wheels. There are screws on the bottom of all the chassis that stick down and catch on crossing/rerailers and Kadee magnets. I am going to have to figure something else out for those. Again, it IS truly nice to have a start point…the flywheel motor and drivetrain look solid and probably quiet. If I had it to do over again though I would have probably just bought the powered chassis and used Darth Santa Fe’s coach chassis since I do have printers.

Can you substitutes shorter screws for the ones that are causing trouble?

They are pan head screws so I’m thinking maybe counter sink some flat heads in the same size.

That’d be my plan too.
