Very interesting. UP 1900 Series B40-8 with the lettering spelled "Union Cipacif."

Hi guys. I was railfanning in Lemont yesterday and I saw a westbound autorack train. It was lead by a UP SD70M, a BNSF H2 GP60M, and a very tattered up UP 1900 series B40-8. The Union Pacific lettering on the B40-8 was spelled “Union Cipacif.” I almost thought it was a different railway, until I unscrambled the letters. I wonder what happened to it. Anyone have any ideas? The only thing I can think of is UP has the stencils on wrong. Take care everyone. [:)] Nick

Someone must not have been paying attention when the compartment doors were put on.

This was the first time I have ever seen something like that. Nick

That kind of mix up with the doors used to be very common on the New Haven and later on the Penn Central.

Yep, somebody had fun switching the hood doors around… [swg]

Somebody had once mentioned spotting an Adian Cific locomotive around the Milwaukee area… same cause…

I remember seeing a few SP units like that. One had doors from two locomotives and partialy repeated the Southern. I’ve also seen a few Santa Fe engines with blue/yellow components on a warbonnet and vice versa.

A friend of mine once saw an unpatched Santa Fe Warbonnet leading, with the whole right side of the nose painted red. It then spelled “Sant”, instead of Santa Fe. lol

Isn’t “Cipacif” the name of some kind of antacid, or antidepressant? [;)][:D]

That spelling mixup reminds me of a photo of an N&W car in an old issue of Trains. Sombody mixed up the stencils so the lettering was “NW &” while the railroad’s name above the letters read: “Norfolk West & Ern.” [:D][:D]

before the merger I saw a blue/yellow unit with a red dynamic brake grid. I think it was a GP60 with the grid off of a GP60M.

If that happened to the Penn Central, does that mean “CP” operated on those lines too?[:D]

I once saw a BNSF H1 B23-7 with a green door. [:)]

A few weeks back on Cajon I saw a C44-9 in H2 with the box behind the cab red. Then someone here on the forum posted a picture of the same unit about a week ago.

Heh heh

Back when the SP was hurting for power (92?) they had quite a few leasers on the property. Among those were a bunch of ex-Milwakee road SD40-2 bandits. These units were in Poor shape. Anyway I saw one come through Cajon one day with a whole bunch of doors replaced with new ones. I don’t remember the color but I do remember how those shiney new doors made that unit look that much more junkie. That was quite a colorfull era on the SP as they were leasing anything they could get there hands on.

The Rock Island was notorious for mismatching doors on their U-boats. I’ve seen pictures with units saying Ro Is, ROC AND, ND, Ro Land and Rock Land.
