Vic's Boxcab Dismal

Mockup pics only at this stage:

The plastic body is from a Japanese bump-n-run floor toy I found at a thrift store. The brick is an Aristo FA block, the front and rear trucks are from a Bachmann passenger car. The chassis will be styrene and articulated to allow for R1 operation. I’ll be filling in the doors with grills and only using the front and rear doors and adding interior details.

Much more to do on this one.

sounds like you are having FUN!

Looking forward to more pix.

Looks like a fun project!

Hi Vic
I have to admit I am surprised at the direction you are going with this one
I thought you where going to use it to make a small rail car.
Have you got an details on the rail car ?? looks like it could easily be converted
to a working little rail bus type rail car reasonably easy
regards John

John.

I already have 3 railbusses, so I didnt want another. I am builting most of stuff today canibalizing older models and unused stuff from the parts box. When I put my spare FA block under it I notice the overhang, so I had a pair of passenger trucks nearby, put them under and realized it looked like alot of early boxcabs, particularly traction motors, I just decided to do it as an early diesel/electric version. I am trying to move away from the numerous critters and dinkies I have and build up a small number of bigger engines. I’ll always have the dinkies, but I want a couple big units also[:D]

Pics came out kinda bad but progress so far.Get better pics next time.

Vic, you are quite the madman.[:D] I love it! [tup]

Just wait until you see what I have up my sleeve. It’s N scale, but I think it is up your alley. Unfortunately, I have some major work to do on it, so it may be a while until I am ready to display it.[^]

Vic,
Having never seen one of these before I just kinda’ wondered about something. Why is it the floor extends so far past the body. Is that the way those are built? Looks like a really different project. Later eh…Brian.

Vic,

Looking at your progress so far -it reminds me of the electric loco designed by Sir Vincent Raven -typically it was number 13…

is there an actual prototype of a 4-10-6?[?]

Brian its actually a freelanced varient of some early electric boxcabs like these:

Granted that creates a problem with my layout as I have no desire to wire a catenary system. The floor toy to me looked like a perfect candidate for this kind of engine so I just decided its my RR! I decided to try a varient, an electric styled engine thats been rebuilt with a diesel motor stuffed inside. On the originals, the articulated end platforms to allow for operation on tighter radiuses, gave room for additional pair of traction motors to be used while giving a working platform for the crews at each end of the engine. I wanted to model that aspect onto my engine.

Mine is set up to use a single 2 axle B bogie with a 2 axle lead truck with a work platform for crews at each end creating a 4-B-4 arrangment.
This engine bests illustrates close to what my goal is:

Excuse me if I am mistaken, but I am assuming that your question is directed towards me, because I am the only one with a 4-10-6 in this thread.[^]

No, there is no prototype of a 4-10-6 steamer. I’ve been drawing this style of locomotive for years, starting in about 6th grade or so (I’m in 11th now). A few years ago, I started using the computer for drawings, and turned out my signature picture late last year.[:D] I like big locos.[tup]

Vic;
You sure must love a good challenge. Enjoying your progress reports and pix.

My own “to do list” just got a whole bunce bigger, daughter and future son-in-law announced for a Nov wedding. Too many things to get done around the house, so my own GRR progress will be much slower.

Vic,
Now I see what you are up to. This is truly different alright. Even without the cantenary system it will make for an interesting loco. Makes me think just what kind of unique setups can we come up with to accomodate our RR’s or just our imaginations. That would make for a truly interesting buildoff. Great job so far BTW. Later eh…Brian.

A few more pics of a now slowly moving project, wife’s been on the warpath about getting the garage done so my spare time is becoming increasingly rare…

Now working on the roof and crew decks, when I can. Dont expect to fini***his one anytime soon.

Welcome to my world[V]! Looking good, I always enjoy the off the beaten path models or Original shall I say, you build!

Its loking great, just need to remove the japaniese charaters and its an american protopype! As long as you don’t give up is progressing. Hope you don’t mind if I borrow the picture of 1593. That shuld be interesting in HO. have fun.

Find your projects very inspiring - interesting use of parts too - very impressed

tempted to build one of these

another one off the bench…

Looks wounderfull. Woulda thought you would paint it maroon or something like that. Are the japanese characters (writing) staying on? how does it take curves?
