Video: A visit to the 2015 National Train Show, part 1

Love it!

It was fun to meet you at the show Cody!

Can’t wait for the second part!

I am really looking forward to the Bachman smart interface. Did Mr. Lynch mention a price point for the smart interface?

I was waiting with baited breath for the reports from Portland! The potential that LCC holds is fantastic. Thanks to the MR staff for sharing show highlights!

As always great coverage of the National Train Show. Great products and nice people. BTW, that is a snazzy light rail system you’re riding on, any details on that after the show?? Thanks.

Did bachmann have their new Ez app and bluetooth technology showing?? excited about that

Great show. Got to meet Pelle and Neil - Tony and Cody were busy when I came by. Keep up the good work!

Down here in Australia we don’t have as many Train Shows as you Guys in The States do which I guess is because of your larger population. Even so your shows seem to be far and above what we get in Sydney ( it’s usually in October), Brisbane ( In May ) and Melbourne which I’m unsure of when as I’ve never been but something in my memory is guiding to June/July which is our Winter so take your Winter Woolies as Melbourne can be very cold.
One thing I feel is missing from the Hobby in Australia is the smaller Suburban or Club Shows.
I’m sure there would be quite a few on of a year but not that easy to find out about them.
Also one thing against me is my location which is in Bushland Beach about 20 KS North of Townsville, Qld as North Queensland is far away from everywhere so travel costs are always a killer.
We are 1,200 KS North of Brisbane or 359KS South of Cairns so it’s a half day’s drive to Cairns taking it easy or a 2/3 day drive to Brisbane then of course accommodation on top of that.
Flying out of Townsville in any direction can be expensive also so it is difficult to attend Shows like this.
We also are finding it a challenge in getting the young Kids into the Hobby as You-Tube, Facebook, Twitter and all social media and/or Games/Internet use are grabbing everyone’s attention at the moment.

From what we can see in the video clip the Portland Show looks Fantastic, Well maybe next year if our struggling Aussie Dollar slows up it’s descent. Last time I looked it was worth around 70 cents U S.
That may buy us a Hamburger each while having a stroll around at the next National Train Show.
Best wishes to all us Big Kids and Train Nuts and wishing you all smooth rail running on your Layout.
Denis May.

Very interested in the Atlas code 83 curved turnouts.

Are Bachmann backing away from their Spectrum standard? I note that their new stuff seems to be arriving with “sound value” instead of full spec decoders. Even to the extent of downgrading previous Spectrum models like their excellent HO Baldwin 4-6-0, which used to be full Tsunami but those announced at the show are DCC ready or “sound value”. Maybe our MR Ace Reporter Cody could ask them?
Bill.

The show was amazing, and I got tons of awesome stuff. Thanks NMRA and model railroader!

Great informative video! Thanks.

Cody, I can’t believe you missed a golden opportunity to make a joke about David Popp. When you interviewed the Atlas folks and they showed you the new curved turnout, you should have mentioned that you can’t solder to the metal frogs like David tried to do. Otherwise a good show. For those of us who can’t make it, you at least give us the highlights.

It was a terrific show. I was there for the NMRA convention week and for the National Train Show. But Model Railroader, I do have a beef with this video. The entire thing focuses on 6 big-name manufacturers who are the heavy hitting advertisers for MR. The LCC segment was the only part that did not fit this description. That is not very accurate or fair coverage of such a major event. There were dozens and dozens of other smaller manufacturers showing new products. What about them?

I know that the “part 2” of this story lists many of those other products, but it is just a text report with some pictures. It doesn’t have a video segment, and video is a powerful advertising vehicle. It is my hope that MR completes the story and puts up a video segment to go with part 2, so those other manufacturers have a chance to talk about their wares “on TV”.

Nice job Cody, hopefully someday I’ll make one of those NMRA Conventions myself!

LEGO railroad? Just a note. Don’t let your kids view this!!! My two boys do a lot of LEGO and would love to make a RR. We have investigated this and it is impossible unless you have creds with the company. Track, bricks, wheels couplings are impossible to get and when you by chance find a few parts on E-bay, or at the thrift store, they are probably the wrong color. LEGO has it figured out how to make tons of money by showing kids these layouts that are fantasy for the average child to make unless you spend thousands of dollars on their kits, disassemble them, and use the parts to scratch-build their own. I will always remember the tears of my boys when we discovered their dreams of a LEGO RR were dashed by LEGO greed.

If anyone out there knows how a child can obtain the necessary parts to make a LEGO RR, let me know.

Got the message on the Pelle Søeborg thing…two years ago.

Re Lego:
The company switched from metal powered tracks to plastic rails and battery power 5-10 years ago.
If that’s what you want, a set with engine and three freight cars (and oval track) is about $200 and available from Lego Shop at Home (on internet.) Passenger train set is a little less. A pair of points about $20.
Older sets are in high end toy stores or online. No individual cars in a decade,Hope this helps…

I would like to echo Max’s point in that it would be terrific in that the smaller vendors have that opportunity for exposure. All that we can do to promote the many manufacturers benefits the hobby as well as those who provide their products. However, perhaps the MR staff and others do not have time to vete the quality of the lesser known before promoting which could be part of the hindrance.

I finally got around to watching the show video. Good job Cody of covering the “Big Guys”. I too would like to
have seen some of the smaller variety vendors of Scenery, etc. I get the feel of either a short time slot or a
Yankee with ADD when I see Cody doing this kind of close timed events. He moves around like a speeded up
video. I could never keep up with him either physically or in speech. Of course I am a 70 yr old deep Southern
Red Neck from North Carolina. I do love Model Roader–all aspects. Have been a subscriber–all magazines–
& HO & N scale Modeler since 1977 when I used my first child, a Daughter to get a train layout in the house.
We don’t get many shows down our way in the Triad so I watch about everything you put out on video of shows
and layouts.
Keep up the Great work!!.
