It is a great locomotive to own. I enjoy those syle of locomotives. I have a custom painted Athearn Seaboard Coast Line GP 9 in my collection. It is right now pulling a local freight on my model railroad. The Athearn Genesis locomotives are well priced and I would buy one at some point. Athearn always impresses me with the stuff they put out. I will buy it when I put an order for it. Then I go down to the local hobby shop and I buy it. Athearn’s Genesis series keeps getting better and there is lots of great items to buy when they come out.
Outstanding ! I sure wish we had these available when I was younger. Just think where we’d be now.
While athearn geneisis models are always good looking I have not had much luck with them running very well. I purchased the new gp7 and it had trouble with stalling at turnouts. Now I know some will say its my turnouts, but all my other non Athearn engines work fine. I tinkered and tweaked this engine but still could not get it to run on turnouts, in the end I returned it to my LHS and did not get another one. as I’ve similar problems in the past with 4 axle genesis.

Beautiful model!!
Beautiful model!!
Thanks for stating that this model can be manually notched.
I have several HO Athearn Genesis locos: they are beautiful models and excellent runners.
pretty cool any other road names other the ATSF

Runs pretty smooth. Only thought I had, the engine seems a little quiet. I have MRC DCC so we’ll find out soon. Good job guys.

Athearn did a nice job overall working to correct the problems with the detail on the shell. The unit does look nice but needs the chains removed on the end hand rail stands. Only the 2651 and a few of the first GP7 units had the chains. All of the other units had the solid end rails without chains. The P2K had the same mistake but emailed the correct end rails to anyone who asked when they were first new. This is a common mistake and most imports miss this detail. Nice overall.

I got one of those super detailed machines and they are truely beautiful. Mine was a non DCC that I equipped with a decoder. With all the lights on the outside of my SP black widdow scheme loco and all the cables inside the cab I had thought of more lighting effects possible and then at least the reverse red light to have a bulb. Athearn needs to look at some development on the lighting side in terms of features (cab lights, number boards, etc) and in terms of wiring efficiency too many wires to the board. This makes the shell to busy inside and one can not put addl features into the shell. May be you can also include these items into your product review. There are even models that have lit marker lights from other manufactures in a comparable price range.

I’m a big fan of Athearn locomotives…for the price they run good and look good as well. I’m glad to see some early diesels being produced as it seems that modern power has over saturated the market. I hope a GP30 is in the not to distant future.

This is a really great model, I have recently purchased the SD70-2M, and am very pleased with this Athearn model, runs and sounds great. You have to reset the CV’s on the Tsunami sound equipped locmotives, tweak them untill you solve the stalling at the switch’s.
