Video: Building HO scale Winter Hill quarry branch part 6

Thanks very much for sharing this video. I do have a question, though. When doing the touch-up work, isn’t there something we’re not supposed to paint? If so, which part is that?

Thanks again.

Great video. I’ve never used a sprayer before. What’s the general rule of thumb for determining how much paint will cover a how many linear feet of track using your three step approach for painting?

Cool. So now I know that you CAN paint the tops of the rail, or the rail head, but just clean them before 24 hours after the paint is applied.

Thank you Cody and Steve,
Alexander

Im hard of hearing and was wondering whats the toothbrush for? and what type of sandpaper u use to scrape the paint off the rail?

Thanks.

Nice demo on painting the rails. Good tips too

What happened to the chem. tarnish for rails? Is it still available?

I wonder why Cody said to have a respirator and then didn’t put it on?

Nice job Cody thanks for the tip but shouldn’t you also be wearing a face mask when spraying?

I was told to not model what you can’t see. Why paint the backside of the rail web?

You can go your local gun shop and buy a bottle of Birchwood Casey gun blue or black. It works a treat on rail and also is electrically conductive.
It is also great to use on brass wheels or steel wheels.

Good demo, question: what about the inside top portion of the rail, should that not be cleaned as well, for optimal electrical pick up for engines?

Bandwidth constrained; not on this end. Makes for an uncomfortable watching experience.
Otherwise, I have been very much enjoying these installments. Good job!

Cody,
Have you ever tried using a degreaser like CRC 26 on the top of the rails - applied with a flat piece of masonite etc, to stop the paint sticking to the rails tops?

Thanks for the posting guys…and Cody, the beard is working for you buddy!

Cody did not use the respirator because talking through one is difficult, and makes poor video. They could do a voice over, but that lacks real-time speech & visual relationship. Let us presume that their layout space is quite well ventilated. This is no different than the woodworking magazines that stress safety and then show table saw work without blade guards in place. What MR is doing is giving readers good safety information as well as good audio visual instruction.

That is the way I see it. I think they are doing a good job, and I am willing to continue to pay for professionally done material.

Removing paint from the top of the rails can be accomplished after 30 minutes dry time–it comes off easier then than the next day. Nice segment.

Cody, after you paint the rails can you take the alchohal and clean the top of them instead of using the eraser? Would that work faster or ruin what you just painted?

Ive used the markers an they are good as I can’t use my spray
gun indoors I take my work out to my carport but you can’t take train woek out there.

I noticed that too about not using the face mask. It probably would have been difficult to listen to Cody, maybe you need a moderator and a person doing the task. Also I recommend that when you do some detail work or you highlight a product, then show that in a closeup small screen for a little bit of time.
