Video: HO scale SW9 by Proto 2000 from Walthers

I intend to buy one of these switchers but hope that the sound level on the real item is a lot better than the demo video. I had to do like Charles Sanchez did with the volume control, i.e. down for the speaker and all the way up for the engine’s DCC sounds. Seem to me that people at ModelRailroader could fix this recurring problem. MWF

I have 5 Proto 2000 (non-sound as yet)locos and have always been impressed with their smooth start up and slow running capabilities.

This model appears to continue this tradition. Unfortunately I had to turn my speakers almost to max to hear it’s sounds (might not have been the decoder’s fault). The ability to control the engine rev sounds independently is a big advantage. Other sound equipped loco’s I have only do so if I actually place a good load behind them.

I enjoy your DCC product reviews, but the DCC sound audio capture is typically quite poor.

Please look into getting a decent parabolic microphone (or functional equivalent) so that the DCC sound can be captured. I think that the sound level of the locomotive should be only slightly lower than the person doing the review.

Does this also come as UP? It looks great.

Smooth running locomotive with some nice sound effects. Thanks Dana.

Great looking Loco ,but couldn’t make out the sound

Very nice unit with a great paint job, and sound. If I may make a suggestion to try something for our friends that can’t hear the sounds very well:
Maybe try placing a wireless lapel mic on the back side of the unit, opposite the camera view, with the body pack trailing on a flat car a few cars back. You may be able to obtain a louder recording volume of the loco, while keeping things out of site (and testing pulling power too). Might be too cumbersome, but worth a shot for those folks wanting to hear the sounds more clearly.
Thanks again, Dan

I would echo the earlier comments regarding sound volume of the engine. I’m sure everyone viewing your live reviews of sound equipment would appreciate an improvement of the sound volume on future reviews.

Hopefully,

Chuck

Good Work

Good Work

Cool loco but I could barely could hear the sound. A filming problem I hope!

I am a fan and enjoy all the video segments you do very much but your demo layout has one frustrating feature. The red paint on the temper board on the side of the grid work. The portion that has dark green is far less distracting from the action on the layout. I guess it could be toned down a bit with a higher camera angel or some earth tone paint? Keep up the great work Aloha
