Video: How to work with static grass

Looks like a very eficient way of applying gras and subsequently sprucing up a tired faded grass aspect of an existing layout. Will try and obtainone. Thanks for the display

For other do-it-yourselfers, there are other ion generators available if you keep your eyes open. They were available for less than $10 including shipping a few years ago, but those regular sources dried up. I have also seen plans for converting the electric flyswatters into flock applicators.

Thank you Cody, you made something I thought might be a challenge into a can do project.

I already have worked with static grass. Wonderful results!

How about a magazine article with instructions for building an applicator?

Some people in Brazil make their own “grassinator” with very good results and at very lower costs than the Noch “professional” applicator.

Anyway, the static grass is and the applicator adds a lot of scene.

good product, but i can get same results without the price. tho i do have one, i rarely use it. rub an old metal tobacco can with a wool shammy, add holes to top, same thing.

I bought a product called a grasshopper that is a smaller and lot less expensive version at Trainfest last year. The hopper is smaller and It doesn’t have all the attachments of the Noch version, but I believe I paid less than $50 for it and it applies static grass just fine.

static grass is agood ideal for layouts , but the grassmaster is a little pricey.

Cody’s reports are always interesting.
I would like to have seen more closeups of the grass.
Could the same techique be used for applying snow to some parts of winter scenes?

The video was helpful. I have the applicator and have used it a several times. I did not use isopropyl alcohol or the scenic adhesive shown, but will try both for the next application. I have several different colors and length of fiber and like to use a mix in an area for variation and realism.

Great suggestion on the static grass.
Changing the subject.
I’m using homosote as a sub railbed. What would be the better product to seal the homosote before applying the actual cork railbed?? I have heard suggestions from hairspray to varnish

I appreciate the time you took to show how this product works. I always wondered how it did it’s magic. Now I will buy one.

Nice…

maybe u could show how to build a Grassinator on the web

I still use bug zapper racquet that I modified by removing the head and attaching one of the wires to a small metal sifter that I fastened to the battery handle. The other wire becomes the ground wire. It works well. Buy the strongest zapper on the internet $10 + shipping and the sieve. We used hairspray when layering!

very helpful

Good Job Codi very Imformative.

Looks great, but I have always used a kitchen fine strainer which works well if you use it sparingly by just tapping the strainer. I use a tiny vacuum from dirt devil to pickup patches of too much grass

There are also reports of making applicators using the HF electronic fly swatter or a cheap bug zapper. Basically you take out the electronics and connect to a container with screen for sifting out the grass fibers. I have used a homemade version made by a friend and it works fine.
