I have been taking videos and photos of trains of 3 years. I’m thinking about going to the Cumbress and Toltec should I take photos or videos of the experience?
Since you’ve been doing both, why not continue your current practice? You’ll be experiencing a really wonderful operation so there will be opportunities for some great images. However, plan on some time just to enjoy the moment and not be focused on getting a shot or video.
Good advice, CharlesB17! Welcome to the forum.
I do both photography and videography of trains here on the Surfline. Its real easy for me personally to do both because I have a DLSR camera, so I can just flip a switch to go between photo and video. I guess my answer would depend on whether you use a single camera like me, or have a seperate camera and camcorder. If you have a dual use camera I would go for whatever you want! If not, I guess it depends on what you would rather carry with you. Above all though, just enjoy the experience and the photography will come naturally, as @CharlesB17 said!
Welcome CharlesB17 I agree with you if you can do both do both , but definitely take time to enjoy it for your self.

I have a Tripod, so I tend to take mostly videos, but there’s still times where I’ll snap photos whether it be that one truck bolt that there’s no picture of or a nice shot in general. Videos I find are harder to sort, however I’m also building up a Video Archive of stuff.
Ive done both myself. I prefer photo if its a normal event (i.e a freight train) ans video if possbile if its a special event (Steam runby) .
Imo, both are valuable mediums and both hace thier drawbacks
Thank you for the help
