I found a site that has a archive of videos.

Initially I was hunting for war time films and stumbled across train videos and other similar material.

An example is one video http://www.archive.org/details/Mainline1957

This one deals with 1957 railroads. There is a search function on the site where you are permitted to search for “Trains, railrods etc” with different terms and find films, pictures etc related to what you are hunting for.

Hope this helps. I have a feeling that this would be a resource for layout planning or other hobby related work.

I mentioned this on another post I made a few weeks ago. If you are interested in older footage of particular lines - mostly steam but a few diesels and electrics - check out America’s Railroads: The Steam Train Legacy. Comes on either DVD or VHS. They are mostly promotionals for the individual RRs but have some absolutely priceless footage on operations. Found Vol 1 on Amazon on DVD for $30. A must have if you are into classic trains.
