That roof over the tracks and platforms should be the eighth wonder of the (architectural) world, and I have no idea of what the other 7 are. That roof is beautious to the extremest.
Stunningly impressive, as is, check out the lower photo, the atmospheric clarity; that is the nation’s capitol after all…
My daughter lives and works in Vienna and says it is a really great station. She also says that the U-Bahn is connected to it.
I visited Vienna back in June for work (so I didn’t have much time to poke around, though I did get to see the Technishes Museum and Schunbrunn Palace), and I just loved it. I wish I’d had more time to see things - our trip to the Ringstrasse had to be canceled; instead we visited the eastern edge of the Alps for a great view of the city. I used the CAT to get from the airport to center city, then the U-4 subway line to get to my hotel; it was excellent public transportation. Definitely worth visiting, and I want to go back to see all of the things I wasn’t able to.
AS Francis says it is a very clean city and as Rodrick says it is a great place to visit. Transportation is really excellent. Our last visit was to three countries and only one train delay at Innsbruck which was announced as being a law enforcement issue. They wanted riders to know that the delay wasn’t their fault. It is amazing to see railroad right of ways being clean and nice appearing, sure a lot different than the views outside a train in the US. We missed our first cross country train due to their two minute station stop and only had to wait an hour to catch the next one. Sure much better than a 24 hour wait in the US.
Just returned from another visit to Vienna. One of our trips took us from the new station and it is impressive. Took the Frankfurt to Budapest train. On time but going to Hungary is slower than going west from Vienna. Eastbound only hit 99mph. Rail equipment in Hungary looks to be older and in worse shape than Austrian equipment. R-O-W in Hungary looks more like US with old buildings and trash along tracks especially outside Budapest. Took a westbound trip out of Vienna Westbahnhof station to Innsbrook and hit 140 mph in a stretch there. Smooth and on time. Two minute station stops are a pleasure. No baggage cars to deal with.
Budapest to Frankfurt train was standing room only which was a couple of days before Christmas.
Very little snow in the Alps and tourist and ski business hurting.
