CSX is posting updates on the progress of the tunnel rebuild. Here is a look at first work.
Who is Chuck? An actual person? My daughter lives and works in that neighborhood on 8th Street ( and did not oppose the project) and I might go visit “Chuck” the next time I am up there
I suspect ‘Chuck’ is the community leaison for CSX for this project.
Balt: What kind of CSX work windows are going to be happening at the tunnel ?
MofW flagging orders have been in effect at least 12 hours a day and sometimes 24 hours a day for the past 6 weeks. Whatever the actual work activity the flagging orders are protecting are unknown to Transportation personnel.
Other than the clearing of brush and some pretty heavy bulldozer work on the north end of the tunnel, nothing is evident from the track. We’ve been getting cleared through the location without delay. An undercutting operation, just south of there at L’Enfant Plaza has taken #3 track through the old bureu of engraving spur right of way, west of the normal #3 location. 2 main has been shifted to the newly undercut 3 main location. #1 is out of service while 2 main’s roadbed is being undercut. Got all that? The bulletin messages were at least that clear! Along with a message stating that the new southward signal at 14th street was equipped with a “Dowell arm”!
Latest update to construction. Note first pilings are going to be bored this next week.

One point that the diagram of the tunnel brings out. Planned top of rail to bottom of tunnel is planned to be 21.0 feet. That would seem to preclude any future electrification. Anyone know for sure ?
CSX is not a electrified railroad.
Proposed Virginia avenue tunnel construction schedule for now thru November. Sounds like good planning as who know what hold ups may occurr ? Weather, soil, historical items etc.

Some historical sites have already been found
Seems like CSX is fairly on the ball about all aspects of this project (as much as is bureaucratically possible at least
When this project is completed as planned without major issues, can the CSX planners and engineers then slap the Committee of 100 and the Navy Yard/Virginia Avenue NIMBYs in the face with fish?
When the ‘Committee of 100’ had to go before the courts with their arguments, it was found that only 1 of the ‘Committee of 100’ had a direct interest by residency in the project.
The first of probably many unplaned utility shutdowns. DC water found an undocumented water valve that is going to shut down water service this evening.
What a find! An ancient artifact that still has value!
Is this that famous “one-percent” I’ve heard so much about?
Contractor is starting first excauation for the new tunnel next to present tunnel. When second tunnel complete old tunnel will be expanded although some work on old tunnel will proceed while building second tunnel.
evidently due to unknown utilities relocation excavation is just now starting for the new tunnel. Weekend work is probably to help get project back on schedule. This work is the new tunnel will be built as cut and cover next to present tunnel.
Then the old tunnel will be uncovered and rebuilt to plate “H” clearances. will be two separate bores probably with pass thru doors to other bore.
