Virginia governor plans $1 billion for rail, transit projects

Nice to see that Governor Ultrasound has found better things to do than push transvaginal probes for women seeking to terminate pregnancies.

What about trackwork to allow more Amtrak trains to serve Richmond’s downtown station?

First off, GALLIGAN , keep your California sense of morality out of the topic along with your politics. As a Virginian I am excited to see a Republican pushing for rail improvement and the prospect of Amtrak to Roanoke. Trains webmaster should enforce remind themselves of the above suggestion: Please keep your feedback thoughtful, on-topic and respectful. Offensive language, personal attacks, or irrelevant comments will be deleted.

Is the route to Roanoke via Richmond or Norfolk? Or is it via the I-81 corridor?

Isn’t he a Republican? How did he acquire vision when most of them don’t have it when it comes to provisions for rail passenger transportation and apparently never will.

The Governor is spot on in his thinking about the need for a world class transportation system, which means strengthening rail. And this comes from a Republican who inherited a $6 billion deficit when he took office a few years ago. If only we could spark this foresighted thinking at the federal congressional level.

I really wish rail service could go as far as Radford, VA or to Wytheville because traffic on I 81 is horrific and so many students go to Virginia Tech and Radford from the DC and Manassas areas. In the 1970’s I took the train several times to Virginia Tech ( Christiansburg).

Isn’t this is a railroad site? Not a progressive rant area.

Via Lynchburg. Old N&W Lynchburg-Roanoke.

Only one big thing is missing in these ambitious rail projects for Virginia; it’s high time a tunnel or a bridge be built to connect Newport News and Norfolk by rail. That would be a major public works project that would be worth investing in.

It’s a distance of 50 miles or so from Lynchburg to Roanoke, last served by Amtrak’s “Hilltopper” in 1979. That train also had a flag stop at Bedford, which would be a good tourist stop serving the “D-day” Museum.

Nice of Governor Ultra Sound to actually work on something that will benefit his state and the surrounding area. But I’m guessing that the Tea Whacker Party will be very upset that he’s doing anything at all to help improve mass transit or other passenger rail.

Our start-up in Tennessee is planning to span the State of Tennessee and run the I-81 corridor as well. Plans are in the works to connect Tennessee with Virginia, North Carolina, and Atlanta in the East. Plans in the West are in the works as well.
