Virginia Transportation Board Approves Massive Improvement Program

Anytime any governmental entity is willing to invest substantial amounts of funds in transportation infrastructure, it’s a great day for reidents of the area served.

This trend is bipartisan - GOP Governor McConnell refused to drink the far right anti-train/streetcar/light rail Kool Aid.

Miles, that is absolutely true. But what about those taxpayers in Abingdon?

The real answer to I-64 traffic woes would be to close the rail gap between Norfolk and Newport News with a rail tunnel or a bridge. It would also be nice if some long-term plans could be made by Amtrak to restore Chicago service from the Hampton Roads area.

I understand that this will also fund a 2nd Lynchburg (and Roanoke) train.

Is there any hope for Main Street Station and running all trains to it.

The state is facing a $1.55 billion deficit this year.
Time to spend money on nice to haves!
Kool Aid for everyone as long as somebody else is paying for the round!

There is ZERO chance of routing all trains through Main Street station. Nor would we want to.

  1. It is NOT on the main CSX north-south line.
  2. It is connected to CSX by curvy steep grade rails which take over 20 minutes ONE WAY to get from CSX to the station. Adding 40 minutes to EVERY Amtrak north-south train for very little gain.

Now, if east-west passenger service restarted, Main Street Station is the place to go.
